A leading engineering contractor client of mine are on the lookout for a Senior Protection and Control Design Engineer. This leading Tier One contractor in the T&D space works with regional, national and international electricity network owners and operators to provide technical engineering solutions across the full spectrum of the electricity grid, including overhead lines, cabling, substations and distribution networks.

The main function of the role is to engineer the control and protection designs for electrical substation projects up to a voltage of 400kV, working on key electrical infrastructure projects for National Grid. The role also includes the planning and procurement responsibilities as needed for the delivery of substation projects.

Selected Key Technical Accountabilities:

  • Presentation of front end design principles to client via production of single line/block logic/tripping diagrams and design intent document, as required
  • Preparation of equipment specification sheets (ESS)
  • Initiation of the production of General Arrangements, Circuit Diagrams and Wiring Diagrams and the final approval of same
  • Initiation of the modification of existing interface drawings and final approval of same
  • Establishment of cubicle steelwork requirements and final approval of same
  • Specification of protective and control equipment deemed necessary to fulfill the panel design
  • Specification of ancillary equipment for project, i.e. batteries, LVAC, metering, etc.
  • Create project relay settings files
  • Protection setting calculations
  • AC / DC loading calculations
  • Trip circuit volt drop calculations
  • Specification of instrument transformer requirements and light current detail of any plant mechanism, etc.
  • Initiation of front end cable design taking due account of access for cable routing
  • Initiation of electrical interlock design and final approval of same
  • Initiate the preparation of I/O Schedules and control system interfaces
  • Review subcontractor Risk Assessments and Method Statements

Selected Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the team in understanding of client requirements, including those not captured in the contract, and the ability to influence contact specifications.
  • Closely collaborate with other Chief Engineers and Design Delivery Managers and promote collaboration within the discipline between the Designers and Technicians.
  • Work in close collaboration with the discipline Design Delivery Manager to ensure that the team’s technical competencies and expertise are developed and maintained.
  • Lead on any technical challenges affecting tender development and live projects and in doing so provide support to the relevant Design Delivery Manager.
  • Support the Lead Designer during tender development, particularly regarding risks and opportunities.
  • Support changes in process and technology proposed and undertaken by the Digital and Delivery teams.
  • Contribute to the development and updating of the design aids and computer programmes and assist in the analysis of new design concepts.
  • In conjunction with the lead project design engineer(s), help ensure that the discipline’s scope of work for each project is technically compliant with customer requirements, quality standards and safety by design principles.
  • Proactively support the discipline activities whether they are standalone or part of multidisciplinary Contracts.
  • Look to implement Engineering Excellence, Safety by Design and sustainability goals in everything we do.
  • Ensure that Manuals and Technical Procedures provided for compliance with the appropriate Quality and Safety standards are maintained and applied.
  • Support PDRs for discipline alongside the Design Delivery Manager.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • HNC in Electrical Engineering or higher
  • Liaising with customers and suppliers
  • UK Industry experience, preferably National Grid.
  • Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and associated power system components
  • Calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs
  • Microsoft Office Packages
