About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Contracts Manager to oversee the delivery of complex mechanical services projects across a diverse portfolio of sectors, including education, health, defence, commercial & industrial, residential and utilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for the operational, technical and commercial success of mechanical building services contracts from inception to completion, ensuring work is delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Leadership & Delivery
    • Manage mechanical contracts throughout the full lifecycle, from planning and pre-construction to installation, commissioning and handover.
    • Lead, mentor and develop project teams including site engineers, supervisors and subcontractors.
    • Ensure all works are coordinated effectively and aligned with client expectations and contractual requirements.
  • Technical & Design Coordination
    • Review mechanical design packages, specifications, technical drawings and project programmes.
    • Liaise with design consultants and technical stakeholders to resolve issues, approve submittals and maintain design integrity.
    • Oversee production and control of technical documentation, RFIs, site instructions and mechanical drawings.
  • Commercial & Financial Management
    • Manage project budgets, cost reporting, forecasting and commercial documentation.
    • Proactively identify and value variations, change orders and cost opportunities.
    • Work closely with procurement to ensure timely and cost-effective sourcing of materials, plant and subcontract labour.
  • Health, Safety & Quality
    • Champion robust H&S compliance and embed quality standards in all aspects of delivery.
    • Develop, monitor and enforce project-specific safety plans, method statements and quality procedures.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance performance and reduce risk.
  • Client & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, consultants and supply chain partners.
    • Attend project meetings, design workshops and progress reviews to maintain alignment and customer satisfaction.
    • Build strong working relationships that enhance reputation and foster repeat business.

Person Specification

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Contracts Manager, Senior Mechanical Project Manager, or similar role within mechanical building services.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical systems including HVAC, heating, ventilation, plant, pipework and related services.
  • Demonstrable experience managing multiple projects, balancing quality, time and cost in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills.
  • Commercial awareness with proven cost control and variation management capability.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites as required.

Desirable

  • Experience with design & build and traditional contract delivery models.
  • Professional qualifications such as HNC/HND or degree in Mechanical Engineering or Construction Management.
  • Membership of relevant industry bodies (e.g., CIOB, CIBSE).
