About the Role
We are looking for a talented Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team. You will be responsible for designing and developing mechanical building-services systems, working on a variety of projects across residential, commercial, education, and special-structure sectors. You’ll help drive efficient, buildable, and high-quality engineering solutions from concept through to completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop mechanical design solutions (HVAC, heating/cooling systems, ventilation, public health) from concept to detailed design.
- Prepare and produce calculations, specifications, and technical design reports.
- Create 2D and 3D drawings, using CAD and BIM tools (e.g. AutoCAD, Revit).
- Collaborate with structural, architectural, and other engineering disciplines to coordinate integrated building designs.
- Conduct performance analysis (e.g. thermal, airflow) and optimise systems for energy efficiency, cost, and maintainability.
- Ensure designs comply with UK building regulations, CIBSE guidelines, and relevant sustainability standards.
- Visit sites to carry out surveys, support construction teams, and resolve design-related technical queries.
- Participate in design reviews and value-engineering exercises.
- Assist with project reporting, risk assessment, and quality assurance.
- Provide technical support during the construction phase, including responding to site design changes and as-built documentation.
Person Specification / Required Skills
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Experience (e.g., 2–5+ years, depending on level) working in building services design consultancy.
- Proficiency with CAD/BIM tools, such as AutoCAD and Revit.
- Good understanding of mechanical services (HVAC, heating, hot/cold water systems) and design principles.
- Strong knowledge of UK building regulations, CIBSE standards, and sustainability frameworks.
- Analytical mindset: ability to produce and interpret design calculations.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills: able to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Self-motivated, organised, and able to prioritise in a multi-project environment.
- Willingness to travel to project sites for surveys and design support.
- Chartered (e.g. CEng) or working towards chartership is desirable but not essential.
What’s On Offer
- Competitive salary, depending on experience.
- Opportunities for professional development and chartership support.
- Exposure to a varied and interesting portfolio of projects, including structural-engineered buildings.
- Flexible working arrangements / hybrid working.
- Supportive, innovative team culture.
