This is an opportunity to join a growing team within a consultancy. The client specializes in reducing engineering risk through detailed product design and engineering skill sets during new product development. The firm handles a broad spectrum of projects, including medical devices, automotive accessories, retail products, agriculture, and rail industry developments. The client’s facilities include a design office with access to an engineering & model-making workshop, and testing equipment for tensile testing, high-speed photography, and environmental testing. Roles and Responsibilities:

We are seeking a highly organized Design Engineer with a flair for project logistics and exceptional communication skills.

Core skills required:
  • Design Engineering: Experience in early-stage concept development, prototyping, and testing/validation. Understanding of taking a prototype to manufacture. Proficiency in Solidworks and/or Fusion 360. Knowledge of engineering drawings and Bill of Materials.
  • Project Logistics & Operations: Highly organized, capable of managing key project areas. Articulate (verbally and written). Ability to manage sub-areas of projects, source and communicate with suppliers, track costs and lead times, update teams and clients, and identify/mitigate risks.
Required Experience:
  • Mechanical Engineering / Design Engineering degree (or equivalent).
  • 9-12 months of industrial placement experience.
  • Solidworks experience is essential; Fusion 360 is preferred.
  • Demonstrated practical aptitude (e.g., hands-on skills in an engineering workshop, student projects, personal hobbies).
  • Competent in creating spreadsheets, word-processed documents, and presentations.
Preferred Experience:
  • Masters Degree in a relevant field.
  • Familiarity with G-suite.
  • Basic electronics and programming knowledge.
General Technical Skills:

As part of a small team, generalist skills are essential for contributing across all business areas, including 3D printing setup, prototype assembly, testing, and report writing. All activities must be conducted safely, maintaining a clean and tidy workshop, and returning tools to storage. Experience with manual machine tools (bench sanders, bandsaw, pillar drills) is beneficial.

General Responsibilities:
  • Professional and courteous interaction with staff, customers, and suppliers. Leading by example. Direct communication and work with the client’s customers.
  • Accurate time tracking (Toggl), activity management (Asana), adherence to scope and allocated time, meeting deadlines and budgets, and proactive communication regarding potential delays.
  • Proper storage of company documentation and diligent record-keeping in logbooks. Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene of company premises.
Business & Commercial:

Support business targets, contribute ideas for operational improvement, maintain and improve processes, and identify areas for enhanced business capabilities and training.

Design Office:

Stay updated with Solidworks/Fusion 360 CAD software advancements. Maintain supplier contact database. Consider environmental impact in designs.

Personal Attributes:

Motivated, self-starter, proactive in time/resource management. Ambitious, passionate about technical problem-solving. Adaptable to project scope changes. Capable of teamwork and independent work.
