Ready to take ownership of environmental sustainability from day one on a portfolio of complex, high-value energy infrastructure projects? This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading Tier 1 infrastructure contractor as Environmental Sustainability Manager, supporting a multi-project Power Transmission & Distribution portfolio across the Middlesbrough, Teesside and wider North East region. All projects are at early or kick-off stage, offering genuine influence, visibility and the opportunity to shape environmental performance from mobilisation through to delivery.
The Portfolio
- A large, complex new-build substation
- Several additional substations and associated enabling works
- A long-term programme of works forming part of a wider regional energy investment
The wider business has a strong national pipeline, but this role is regionally focused - no national travel and no regular overnight stays.
The Role
As Environmental Sustainability Manager, you’ll act as the senior environmental lead across a cluster of Power projects - embedded within delivery teams and trusted by Project Directors and senior leadership. This is a hands‑on leadership role, balancing technical credibility, stakeholder engagement and people management.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Acting as the environmental subject matter expert across multiple live and pre‑construction Power projects
- Embedding environmental and sustainability requirements from early‑stage planning and mobilisation
- Providing pragmatic, site‑based advice to construction teams and senior project leadership
- Leading environmental compliance, consents and permit management
- Managing engagement with regulators, clients and external stakeholders
- Line managing and developing a growing team of Environmental Advisors
The role offers flexible working, typically around 3 days on site / office and 2 days working from home, with autonomy to manage your diary.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in an Environmental or Sustainability role within construction or infrastructure
- Strong understanding of environmental compliance during construction
- Confidence operating within senior, multi‑disciplinary project teams
- Experience mentoring or managing Environmental Advisors (or readiness to step up)
- Degree‑level qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or similar (or equivalent experience)
- Professional membership (e.g. IEMA) is desirable
What’s on Offer
- A competitive basic salary
- Car allowance or company car and all expenses paid
- Private healthcare - family cover
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- Annual bonus scheme
- Hybrid and flexible working available
- Pension, share incentive plan, volunteering leave and recognition schemes
- Family-friendly policies including enhanced maternity and paternity leave
- Ongoing Training & Development opportunities
- Long-term project pipeline and clear progression opportunities
Why Join?
- Work on large-scale, complex energy infrastructure from project inception
- Shape environmental performance rather than inheriting legacy issues
- Join a well-resourced, collaborative Environment & Sustainability function
- Strong culture built on trust, autonomy and delivery excellence
- Genuine long-term career development opportunities
If you’re an Environmental Sustainability professional looking for a high-impact Power infrastructure role with long-term security and real influence - we’d love to hear from you.
