Base Lead Transfer Practitioner (ACCTT) B7

Exciting opportunities are now available in the new Adult Critical Care Transfer team (ACCTS) in Kent, Surrey & Sussex (KSS). This new service, known as the ARCC KSS, will strive to provide a high standard of critical care medicine to adult patients requiring interhospital transfers across the region and into London for reasons such as escalation of care, repatriation, capacity and continuation of care. We are now recruiting for a highly skilled and compassionate Band 7 Base Lead /Transfer Practitioner to join our team. We would like to hear from you if you are passionate about critical care and ensuring the safe and effective transfer of critically unwell adults as well as wanting to be part of the development of the service alongside the Leadership Team. Candidates will come from a critical care nursing background.

Main duties of the job:

• As part of the operational and clinical team you will be expected to ensure the smooth running of the ARCC KSS bases (currently Crawley and Maidstone) and help support service development.
• Part of the role will include working as a Transfer Practitioner, to transfer critically unwell adult patients with a Critical Care consultant.
• The candidate will be expected to contribute to the safe and effective running of ARCC KSS, have excellent communication skills and also contribute actively to the management and governance of the service.
• This is a new, unique role that will be a challenging and rewarding career choice for the right person and will help develop skills within this growing specialty.
• This role will be offered on a full time basis, with scope to manage time between the two aspects of the role.
• The Base Lead will assist the Leadership Team in development and delivery of a flexible Adult Critical Care Transfer Service on a day to day basis, to support and guide performance of the transfer team, providing clinical leadership in the specialty.

Job responsibilities:

• Working closely with the ARCC KSS Leadership team to develop robust systems for smooth operational running of the bases including rostering support, procurement, recruitment and governance.
• To support the Leadership team with managerial and operational responsibilities as required.
• To provide logistical and clinical support to transfer teams.
• To be aware of service developments through attendance at relevant meetings and to disseminate appropriate information from these to staff.
• Be identified as a resource within ARCC KSS.
• Production of clinical and operational briefs as required.
• Responsible for ensuring the safe use of all critical care equipment, identifying training needs in relation to this and ensure equipment training records are maintained.
• Preparation and provision of relevant training, including induction training.
• Assist in the maintenance of stock control for medical supplies in line with allocated resources.
• To ensure that the environment and staff comply with Health and Safety and infection Control regulations and that policies and procedures are followed correctly.
• To support review and investigation of Critical Incident (DATIX) reporting.
• To act as a change agent to promote innovation ensuring practice developments are evidence based via specialist protocols/guidelines and through support of other staff.

Person Specification:

• Registered Nurse, registered with NMC.
• Post-registration critical care course or equivalent.
• Evidence of leadership and management within critical care or other relevant environment.
• Excellent knowledge and clinical skills in assessing and managing critically ill or deteriorating patients.
• Successful completion of IV medication administration and IV pump training.
• Successful completion of blood transfusion competencies.
• Successfully completed a Retrieval/Transfer Course (e.g. STricT) or willingness to complete upon appointment.
• Current adult resuscitation certificate (ILS or equivalent).
• Ability to interpret, analyse and act on information from multiple sources.
• Evidence of degree level qualification.
• Higher qualification in retrieval/transfer medicine (e.g. Diploma Immediate Medical Care, Diploma Retrieval and Transfer Medicine).
• Current advanced adult resuscitation certification (ALS or equivalent).
• Completion of an advanced physical assessment course.
• Evidence of relevant teaching/instructing in critical care or transfer.
• Local knowledge of the operational area and structure of the health care provision within the usual operational area.

Knowledge and Experience:

• Significant relevant post registration experience in managing critically ill or deteriorating patients.
• Evidence of managing critically ill or deteriorating patients within the last 18 months.
• Evidence of mentorship/preceptorship roles.
• Experience of formal/informal teaching.
• Evidence of teaching/instructing in resuscitation or relevant subject.
