Help Create Safer Communities Before Crime Happens

Do you want a career where your work can influence everything from the design of new housing developments to the safety of vulnerable victims of crime?

We are seeking two motivated and innovative individuals to join our specialist team as Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCO).

This is a genuinely unique role that combines specialist crime prevention, safeguarding and problem-solving with the opportunity to influence how future communities are designed and built.

As a DOCO, you'll help prevent crime before it happens.

One day you may be working with developers and local authorities to ensure a new housing development incorporates Secured by Design principles. The next, you could be helping a survivor of domestic abuse improve their home security through the Sanctuary Scheme, conducting a safety assessment for a Place of Worship, or supporting initiatives to make public spaces safer for women and girls.

If you're passionate about problem-solving, helping vulnerable people and making communities safer, this could be the role for you.

Skills & Experience

What You'll Be Doing

  • Delivering specialist crime prevention advice to victims, communities, partners and businesses.
  • Supporting vulnerable victims and contributing to safeguarding initiatives.
  • Supporting the Sanctuary Scheme for survivors of domestic abuse.
  • Championing 'Our Plan' and its missions, including tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) through practical crime prevention activity and environmental assessments.
  • Conducting crime prevention surveys and security assessments at Places of Worship and community venues.
  • Promoting Secured by Design (SBD) and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles.
  • Working with local authorities, architects, developers and housing providers to create safer environments.
  • Using structured problem-solving approaches to address crime, anti-social behaviour and vulnerability.
  • Representing Surrey Police at partnership meetings.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for people who:

  • Are passionate about community safety and crime prevention.
  • Enjoy solving problems and finding practical, sustainable solutions.
  • Can communicate confidently with a wide range of people.
  • Can build strong relationships and influencing others.
  • Can manage their own workload whilst working as part of a supportive team.
  • Have strong organisational and IT skills.
  • Have a full driving licence and use of suitably insured vehicle (mileage claim processes in place).

You may currently work in policing, local government, community safety, housing, safeguarding, victim support, neighbourhood services or a related field. Equally, we'd welcome applications from candidates with transferable skills and a genuine commitment to making communities safer.

Training and Development

Successful applicants will undertake structured NPCC accredited training leading to nationally recognised qualifications in Crime Reduction and Designing Out Crime.

This professional development pathway supports progression from Crime Reduction Advisor to fully qualified Designing Out Crime Officer, with associated career pay grade progression.

Make a Difference Before Crime Happens

This is a rare opportunity to combine crime prevention, safeguarding, partnership working and Designing Out Crime within one specialist role.

If you want to help shape safer communities, protect vulnerable people and influence the environments where people live, work and visit, we'd love to hear from you.

DOCOs help design out crime, reduce vulnerability and create safer communities across Surrey.
