We are recruiting two Independent Persons for Brighton & Hove City Council and the East Sussex Fire Authority. Independent Persons are appointed under the Localism Act 2011 to support the appointing body in promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct among elected and co‑opted members. They are consulted when allegations are made against councillors, required to act objectively, impartially, and maintain confidentiality at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Consult with the appointing body when allegations are made against councillors.
  • Act objectively and impartially in all matters.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Formulate impartial, evidence‑based views and exercise discretion and professional judgment in complex situations.

Qualifications

  • Strong public sector ethos and interest in maintaining high standards in public life.
  • Ability to formulate an impartial and evidence‑based view.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and professional judgment.
  • No membership or co‑opted membership of the appointing body or close associate within the last five years.

Remuneration

Annual allowance of £1089.53 plus reasonable expenses.
