Sustainability Strategy and Programme Manager

This is an exciting opportunity for a fixed term 12 month role

Reporting to the Head of Sustainability and Environment, you will be working as part of the Sustainability & Environment Team as the lead specialist for delivering sustainability and net zero strategies and programmes.

The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that also provides integrated sustainability and carbon management services to NHS and other public sector organisations across the UK. They will have responsibility for delivering projects and programme work with and on behalf of other NHS providers within the Sussex and Surrey Integrated Care System (ICS) and beyond.

Main duties of the job

Key duties will include:

To ensure the coordination and delivery of sustainability and net zero programmes within SCFT and our partner NHS organisations. This will include client management as part of the team's consultancy services.

To develop and implement Green Plans in line with net zero and other targets and guidance set by NHSE through the Greener NHS Programme as required.

To develop and maintain sustainability reporting systems including carbon footprint reporting and KPIs.

To support development of a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for the Trust and partner trusts in the region.

To work alongside the Head of Environmental Services and other senior staff to develop the Trust's sustainability strategy and develop external commercial opportunities.

To implement key sustainability related projects.

To work with the team in other areas of sustainability, as required.

Job responsibilities

General:Support the Head of Sustainability and Environment and other members of the Sustainability & Environment team to deliver CWC, developing and managing specific initiatives to achieve Trust sustainability and net zero targets both internally and with other NHS organisations.

Sustainability and net zero carbon strategy development: Lead the development of organisational Green Plans and Net Zero Carbon roadmaps for partner NHS organisations as part of the teams consultancy offering.

Sustainability programme management: Manage the day to day delivery of sustainability programmes across NHS organisations including projects and programmes focussed on clinical sustainability, linking with members of the team to provide client updates, progress reports and regular KPIs.

Carbon footprinting, data analysis & sustainability reporting: Lead on the development of the teams carbon footprint methodology and delivery of carbon footprint data and sustainability related KPI and other reporting for SCFT and our partner organisations. This includes requesting and analysing data internally and externally.

Sustainability Training: Developing and delivering sustainability focussed training to staff both internally and externally.

Person Specification

Qualifications and/or professional registration

• Educated to post-graduate level or equivalent experience in an environment or sustainability related discipline.

Experience

• Detailed working knowledge of UK and EU environmental legislation, in particular relating to climate change and the environment
• Experience of managing sustainability programmes and projects
• Knowledge of sustainability in the NHS
• Member of Institute of Environment & Sustainability Professionals

Other requirements

• Ability to travel between sites, when required

Skills and Knowledge

• Significant experience of carbon footprinting of complex organisations
• Experience of commercial business development and/or consultancy programme/ project management
• Excellent communicator - both verbal and written, as well as presentation and facilitation skills
• Advanced data management skills, using Excel and/or Power BI
• Good inter-personal skills and ability to build relationships
• Advanced problem solving; capacity to process complex information and reach valid conclusions
• Ability to prioritise ongoing planned work adjusting to changing requirements and organisational needs.
• Minimum of 5 years' experience in sustainability within a complex organisation
• Experience of using project management techniques including Agile and Prince 2
