The post holder will work as a Special School Staff Nurse, supporting the delivery of healthcare to children and young people with medical conditions in Special Schools across Brighton & Hove and West Sussex, under the direction of Special School Nurses. Based primarily in the Brighton & Hove Hub, covering four schools, the role may require flexibility to work across other schools as needed. They will work closely with Special School Nurses, Clinical Leads, Community Children\’s Nurses, Paediatricians, and other professionals to ensure safe, high-quality care. The role includes contributing to clinical teaching and supporting student supervision. They will promote and safeguard the wellbeing of children in line with The Children Act (1989 & 2004) and Working Together to Safeguard Children (2013 & 2023).

Main responsibilities include:

  1. Delivering and supporting the consistent delivery of safe, quality nursing care for children and young people within the Special School Nursing hub.
  2. Supporting personal and professional development to ensure competency in key SSN skills.
  3. Contributing to the development and review of School Health Care Plans and emergency care plans.
  4. Providing child/young person-specific health education and promotion interventions.
  5. Facilitating health care teaching for staff, students, and during community placements.
  6. Acting as a health care role model and leader within the school setting.
  7. Maintaining accurate and timely documentation of care interventions and support activities.
  8. Participating in safeguarding processes and supporting junior staff in understanding safeguarding policies.
  9. Supporting in the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical guidelines and standards.
  10. Engaging in clinical audits, research, and quality improvement projects.
  11. Ensuring compliance with health and safety policies and reporting clinical incidents appropriately.
  12. Collaborating with multi-agency teams to meet the needs of children and families.
  13. Supporting staff induction, orientation, and preceptorship.
