The post holder will work as a Special School Staff Nurse, supporting the delivery of healthcare to children and young people with medical conditions in Special Schools across Brighton & Hove and West Sussex, under the direction of Special School Nurses. Based primarily in the Brighton & Hove Hub, covering four schools, the role may require flexibility to work across other schools as needed. They will work closely with Special School Nurses, Clinical Leads, Community Children\’s Nurses, Paediatricians, and other professionals to ensure safe, high-quality care. The role includes contributing to clinical teaching and supporting student supervision. They will promote and safeguard the wellbeing of children in line with The Children Act (1989 & 2004) and Working Together to Safeguard Children (2013 & 2023). Main responsibilities include:
- Delivering quality nursing care within level of competency, supporting and advising children and young people with complex health needs.
- Providing clinical children\’s nursing and public health advice in school settings.
- Developing and implementing care plans for children with complex needs.
- Training school staff in child-specific health care procedures and assessments.
- Developing and reviewing clinical protocols and procedures to ensure safe care.
- Participating in safeguarding activities for disabled children and young people.
- Supporting health promotion activities suitable for a Special School setting.
- Maintaining accurate documentation of care interventions and advice.
- Acting as a resource and role model for special school nursing.
- Attending relevant training and contributing to clinical practice standards.
- Working flexibly across West Sussex and Brighton & Hove as needed.
- Participating in supervision to sustain and develop practice.
Additional responsibilities involve helping ensure consistent delivery of safe, high-quality care, supporting professional development, contributing to care and emergency plans, leading health education, and supporting safeguarding and service development efforts. The role requires maintaining electronic health records, supporting child protection processes, analyzing service data, evaluating clinical effectiveness, and participating in research and audit projects. The nurse will also contribute to policy development, collaborate with other health and social care professionals, and support junior staff through orientation and preceptorship.
