Overview
To work within a professional surveillance team, as a trained operative, capable of conducting covert surveillance operations, producing high quality evidence and intelligence. By way of various covert surveillance techniques to gather intelligence, information and evidence. Working within a dedicated team in support of police and partner investigations. To promote the values of Surrey and Sussex Police, delivering a quality service whilst supporting the detection and prevention of crime. To provide on call surveillance support to Surrey, Sussex and the region. To be flexible, reacting to intelligence throughout both forces and the South East Region.
Responsibilities
- To covertly undertake observations and surveillance utilising technical recording equipment in order to secure evidence and/or intelligence in support of Force intelligence operations.
- When required, to undertake the role of an operational liaison officer, ensuring that surveillance operatives are fully briefed prior to deployment and to ensure all opportunities to gather evidence and/or intelligence are identified.
- To ensure that the intelligence gathered during the course of surveillance is disseminated efficiently and effectively.
- To maintain knowledge and awareness of significant changes in criminal law and procedure and developments in surveillance techniques, training and equipment.
- To be responsible and accountable for the care and maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
- The development of professional contacts within other agencies.
- To maintain knowledge of their working practices and identify opportunities to provide and receive specialist assistance when necessary.
- To report directly to the Sergeant on matters regarding procedure, staffing issues and equipment, ensuring that all matters are dealt with effectively and in line with current guidelines.
- To conduct Surveillance as a motorcyclist contributing to all factors stated above and deploy as a single biker within the team and as a two bike tactic.
- To carry out any other duties as may be determined by the Detective Inspector.
Qualifications
- Is a qualified Surveillance Officer having passed a College of Policing Accredited Q1 Course and is an Advanced Driver, and has passed a College of Policing Surveillance Bike Course and/or a Q2/Q200.
- Is a substantive Police Constable having successfully completed their probationary period.
- Has a sound knowledge and recent experience of Criminal Investigation and proactive covert operations, including experience of sensitive material, court procedure and case file preparation and management.
- Has a knowledge and understanding of National and Force policies covering the deployment of surveillance operatives and/or technical equipment.
- Is an effective communicator and displays determination and enthusiasm, is able to lead and assist others within the team by example and strives to maintain and improve standards.
- Is dedicated to the role and show flexibility to duty often being required to work unsociable hours.
- To have the ability and confidence to work on own initiative.
- Is able to pass the Force Fitness Test and to maintain his or her own personal levels of fitness and health.
- Has a good working knowledge of RIPA, DPA and CPIA.
- The post holder is required to successfully pass Vetting to Enhanced Security Clearance level. The post holder will be required to undertake a hearing and eyesight test prior to appointment in the post and thereafter as directed by Occupational Health.
