Surrey Police have a range of exciting opportunities to join one of our Investigation Teams as a PIP1 (Professionalising Investigations Programme) Investigating Officer. Investigating Officers are an integral part of our teams, they work closely with their Police Staff and Police Officer colleagues to investigate a range of cases. They use a range of police systems and technology to gather evidence and identify offenders, working with internal and external partners to protect our communities, catch criminals and deliver an outstanding service to the public. Surrey Police is looking to recruit to fill PIP1 vacancies across all our investigation teams. These roles are based at Reigate, Guildford and Staines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Joining one of our Investigation teams, every day is different. You will carry your own workload of crimes for which you are responsible.
  • Your day could involve interviewing a suspect, gathering or reviewing evidence, taking witness statements, collecting items for forensic examination and creating case files for court.
  • You will also see your case through the court trial process.
  • You will gain trust from victims and witnesses and be responsible for keeping them updated throughout the investigation.
  • You will be responsible for liaising with solicitors, the Crown Prosecution Service and our partner agencies.
  • You will use the National Decision Model (NDM) and THRIVE assessment (Threat, Harm, Risk, Investigation opportunities, Vulnerability and Engagement) and Investigative Decision Making Model (IDMM) in order to make informed, accountable and well rationalised investigative decisions.
  • This is a challenging role and it will also be emotionally demanding – although the work will be amongst the most rewarding in policing.
  • Because of this it won’t be for everyone which is why we are specifically looking for resilient individuals who are able to persevere in the face of adversity.
  • If you are successful in your application for the role, you must be available to attend a 9-week Investigating Officer course in full. No annual leave is permitted during the course. The next course is anticipated to start in October 2026. If you are not available for the next course, you will be placed in a pool for the next intake.
  • This role involves working a mixture of day and evening shifts, including weekend and bank holiday working for which you will receive a role-dependent shift allowance.

Skills & Experience

  • Be educated to GCSE level Maths and English or have equivalent level experience in the role or organisation.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be comfortable sharing both positive and difficult news, and demonstrate the ability to work under pressure, solve problems and prioritise your workload.
  • Be confident and have the skills and initiative to deal with challenging and unexpected situations.
  • Be able to work effectively unsupervised whilst still being a team player.
  • Be passionate about delivering an excellent service to the public.
  • Be committed to treating people fairly, honest and trustworthy, and always act with integrity.
  • Be able to operate a computer database system and/or the willingness to undertake training and become proficient in the use of Surrey Police systems.
  • PIP1 investigative experience would be beneficial but is not essential as training of PIP1 crime investigations alongside mentoring will be offered.
  • Be prepared to undertake training and development to achieve PIP1 accreditation. This requires the completion of a portfolio. This will usually take 12 months to complete and allotted time to complete this will be given as part of the role.
  • Have a full manual driving licence.
