The volunteer role is to support vulnerable victims and witnesses giving evidence in remote Live Link sites and Police Video‑Enabled Justice rooms in Hastings. The role includes setting up equipment and meeting & greeting the witness when they arrive at the Live Link location. This position works in conjunction with volunteers from Victim Support. You will be responsible for the practical management of the Live Link sites in Sussex on the day of the trial, enabling vulnerable victims and witnesses to give evidence away from a Court building. This includes Video‑Enabled Justice (VEJ) rooms within police stations and Remote Live Link sites located East, West and Central. Witness Care Officers within the Police Criminal Justice Unit (CJU) will liaise with you to assess your availability and provide details of venue, timings and any other relevant information that may affect how you interact with the victim or witnesses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the Live Link room complies with current force guidelines.
  • Set up and prepare all equipment in accordance with guidance.
  • Act as the point of contact and meet the witness on arrival at the agreed location; remain with the witness while they are on police premises.
  • Print, provide and shred the witness statement for familiarisation of evidence.
  • Liaise with the Witness Care Officer from the Criminal Justice Unit once the victim/witness has left the location.
  • Complete any mandatory training sessions to maintain professional development.
  • Submit and claim expenses (mileage) to the Criminal Justice Managers within two months of the expenses being incurred.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and experience dealing directly with members of the public, providing a high level of customer service.
  • Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
  • Able to work without direct supervision and demonstrate a high level of self‑management, motivation, drive, and determination.
  • Able to demonstrate respect for the opinions, circumstances, and feelings of others.
  • Possess a high level of integrity and resilience.
  • Ability to work within agreed professional boundaries with colleagues within Sussex Police and externally.
