Would you like to support victims of fraud in Surrey?

We are looking to expand our team of Fraud Prevention Volunteers within our Safer Neighbourhoods team based in our eleven boroughs across Surrey. If you can offer a minimum of 12 hours per month between the hours of 0800 and 2000 this could be a great opportunity for you!

Due to the nature of this role and the training involved, we are looking for volunteers who can commit to joining the team for at least a year.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

The Role

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference. It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.

As a Fraud Prevention Volunteer, you will:

1. Provide protective messaging to victims of fraud (individuals and businesses) who have reported their crime to Action Fraud and not received a policing response. Victims of fraud who are initially treated as not being vulnerable will not normally have police attend in the first instance, therefore this role is invaluable in supporting those victims who are unlikely to otherwise receive a direct police response.

2. Partake in fraud prevention activities within the community, to raise awareness of fraud types, offer advice on reporting and ways to protect yourselves from fraud. Working in their local areas with Safer Neighbourhood teams and partners to interact with the community at events and engagement stands delivering advice on fraud prevention.

Key Responsibilities

Through your volunteering and the training you receive, you will gain an understanding of the various types of fraud and will therefore be able to provide victims with crime prevention packages relevant to their specific needs.

You will be expected to attend mandatory training sessions to maintain your knowledge of current fraud trends and changes in policy; this will ensure we provide the best possible service to our victims.

Part of your task will be to contact fraud victims to reduce the risk of repeat victimisation and further financial loss through the provision of protective advice packages. The primary means for delivering crime prevention advice will be using online packages, but you may also contact victims via post where online contact is not appropriate.

The additional task that you can support is providing fraud prevention safeguarding advice by providing talks and inputs and community engagement events, alongside police and partners, to raise awareness of how people can protect themselves from being targeted by fraudsters.

Skills & Experience

We are looking for volunteers who have good IT skills including the ability to use Microsoft Excel and Outlook.

Ideally you will have experience of communicating directly with members of the public and providing customer service. You will need to have good communication skills and be able to maintain records efficiently.

There may be times when you are volunteering without direct supervision, so you will need to be self-motivated and able to make decisions independently.

Previous experience of volunteering and/or working within a police environment would be advantageous. An understanding of the key fraud types and prevention advice would be beneficial but is not essential as this will be provided through training for the role.
