What difference will you make?

Effective communication is vital to achieving our mission of supporting community groups and strengthening local networks in Surrey. By moderating the e‑forum and helping members share their stories, volunteers will foster greater collaboration and peer support among community leaders. Their contribution to content planning and story sourcing will ensure our communications are well‑coordinated, timely and aligned with the Commission’s priorities. This will help us increase awareness of our work, encourage wider participation in our projects and events, and highlight the impact of local community initiatives. Ultimately, the role will help us create stronger connections, build capacity across the voluntary sector, and ensure our communications truly reflect and amplify the voices of Surrey’s communities.

What are we looking for?

  • Enthusiastic about community engagement and skilled in clear, inclusive communication.
  • Comfortable working collaboratively as part of a small team.
  • Confident engaging with a diverse range of community organisations and individuals.
  • A background in communications, marketing, journalism, digital media, or community development would be valuable.
  • Experience in writing, editing, or curating content such as newsletters, social media posts, or website articles would be an advantage.
  • An understanding of digital communication tools, such as online forums, or content management systems, would also be helpful.
  • Strong communication skills able to write and edit clearly, and communicate with empathy and professionalism.
  • Good organisational skills able to plan, prioritise and coordinate tasks in line with communication goals and timelines.
  • Attention to detail ensuring accuracy, tone and style are consistent and appropriate for our audiences.
  • Team player willing to work with other volunteers and community partners to deliver shared objectives.
  • Digital confidence comfortable using online tools and supporting others to do the same.
  • Commitment to inclusivity: understanding the value of diverse community voices and helping ensure all contributors feel welcome and heard.

This role would suit someone who enjoys connecting people and sharing stories that make a positive difference. It offers an opportunity to apply and develop communication skills in a purposeful context, working with experienced and supportive colleagues. Whether you’re looking to gain experience in the voluntary sector, return to communications after a break, or simply contribute your skills to a meaningful cause, we would love to hear from you. Above all, we are seeking someone with enthusiasm, reliability and a genuine interest in community life in Surrey. Your contribution will help us celebrate local achievements, strengthen connections, and ensure our messages reach and inspire the people who can benefit most from them.

What will you be doing?

  • Support forum members in confidently posting and sharing their own updates, helping to build a vibrant and self‑sustaining online community.
  • Work with other members of the Communications Team, the Commission Manager and Core Group, to contribute to developing a forward communications planner that aligns with our ongoing projects and campaigns.
