Shared Lives is a national scheme offering a community-based model of care and support. Surrey Choices runs a Shared Lives Scheme in Surrey and surrounding areas. Shared Lives Carers open their homes, families, and communities to support adults in need. Arrangements can be long-term, short breaks/respite, or daytime support to learn new skills or share hobbies.
It is extraordinary because ordinary people open their homes to others across the UK. Living with a Shared Lives family provides independence within the community. Carers are matched to individuals' needs and homes that suit them, respecting their independence and choices.
Shared Lives works with disabled people, autistic people, older adults, individuals with sensory needs, mental health issues, or other support needs, regardless of age. It offers opportunities to become more independent and learn new skills in a safe, supportive environment.
As a Shared Lives Carer, you would share your home with a matched adult. Depending on your availability, this could be a long-term arrangement, short-term breaks, occasional respite care, or spending one or two days a week with the individual.
You will be paid depending on the type of care provided. You will be self-employed, requiring registration and payment of taxes and National Insurance. There are special tax arrangements called qualifying care relief, allowing you to work in other employment as well.
We provide all necessary information, training, and support to help you care for someone with specific needs in your home.
