As a Special Constable you volunteer alongside police constables to fight crime, protect people and build trust in the community. This is a volunteer role with a minimum commitment of 16 hours per month after completing a 14‑week training course.
Role & Key Responsibilities
- Special Constables share the same uniform, powers and responsibilities as regular police officers.
- Typical duties include:
- Responding to 999 emergency calls
- Patrolling local neighbourhoods
- Conducting house‑to‑house enquiries
- Preserving crime scenes
- Presenting evidence in court
Training & Development
Complete a 14‑week training course consisting of:
- One evening session per week
- Alternate weekend sessions (Saturday & Sunday)
After training you may develop additional skills such as UAV (drone), roads policing and public order.
Skills & Experience
We seek individuals with commitment, integrity and resilience. Successful candidates bring clear communication, sound judgement under pressure, conflict management, empathy and professionalism. You must demonstrate values consistent with the Policing Code of Ethics and meet the criteria in the Special Constable Recruitment Guide.
