This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions. Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions. Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities:

In this role you will be working to support operational policing to manage health and safety in a high risk and professionally interesting environment. You will work with police officers to manage complex safety risks and find solutions which allow officers to take the risks they need to, to keep the public safe. The areas you will be working with will be focused on operational policing and include departments such as Tactical Firearms, Roads Policing, Dogs, Public Order and Neighbourhood Policing. There may be occasions when you will be required to provide health and safety advice in relation to major incidents. You will be part of the Health and Safety Service who support Surrey Police and Sussex Police with colleagues who will support you in undertaking your role and your professional development.

Qualifications Skills & Experience:

  • Able to demonstrate competence to carry out the role as required by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations. This is through a combination of relevant experience and qualification. This could include, but is not limited to:
  • NEBOSH Diploma or degree level health and safety or similar qualification.
  • Working towards Cert IOSH / Chartered membership of IOSH.
  • Good general secondary education to GCSE / A Level or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills And Experience:

  • A policing, military or working in a similar high risk environment would be useful in demonstrating suitable knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Specialist knowledge of particular hazard areas and associated health and safety law and the ability to develop new specialisms in relation to service demand and to lead on advice in relation to them.
  • In depth knowledge and experience of health and safety risk management in the police service or other similar multi-disciplined high risk environment.
  • Robust problem solving skills with the ability to provide realistic solutions in a timely manner.
  • Good personal time management, planning and organisational skills with the ability to effectively adapt as necessary with organisational change.
  • Confidence and competence to support and guide other members of the service, for example health and safety advisors and assistants.
  • Provide specialist advice across all health and safety matters to all ranks and grades of the collaboration.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with the ability to provide specialist advice across all health and safety matters to all ranks and grades of the collaboration.
  • IT literate in Microsoft programs, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
