Surfing England is developing a dynamic, forward‐thinking organisation driven by the needs of the surf community. Co‐creating a new coaching framework in 2021, the entity launched the Surf Instructor: Recreation award and now seeks a Trainer Assessor to deliver the upcoming Surf Coach: Progression award.
The Surf Instructor: Recreation award was introduced to provide a broader, higher‐standard entry‐level qualification equivalent to the ISA level 1. It enables certified teachers to lead beginner lessons safely and has gained international recognition.
The new award is an in‐person, three‐phase course delivered exclusively by Surfing England Trainer Assessors. It is aimed at coaches who have completed a level‐1 course such as ISA 1, ASI 1 or the Surfing England Surf Instructor: Recreation award and who have also finished the safeguarding course.
Role and Responsibilities
- Ensure candidates achieve the required competencies for certification.
- Deliver classroom theory, mentoring and assessment for each award phase.
- Maintain an appropriate classroom setup with high‐quality ICT and a venue for in‐water practice.
- Run regular intermediate out‐back lessons to provide practical experience for trainees.
- Assess candidates against the award framework, including lesson planning, beach safety, NOPs, EAPs and safeguarding.
- Provide clear feedback, action plans and administrative completion for each candidate.
Essential Experience and Attributes
- Deep understanding of surf coaching at beginner and intermediate levels with several seasons of experience.
- Passion for developing people and ability to adapt teaching styles to diverse trainees.
- Experience delivering engaging theory courses to varied groups.
- Strong organisational skills and timely completion of administrative tasks.
- Desire to act as an ambassador for Surfing England and the sport of surfing.

The course is priced at £375 per participant. Trainers receive £150 per course, with the remainder covering Surfing England costs and reinvested into coach development. A proportion of the revenue also supports the organization's operating expenses.
