Surfing England is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Finance Manager to oversee the organisation’s financial operations. As a small and dynamic not-for-profit business running a variety of projects, the role is critical to ensure effective budgeting at both project and organisational level. Working with the CEO, the role will provide clear financial insight to support decision-making across the organisation and to support Surfing England’s mission to make life better through surfing, ensuring hard-won resources are managed effectively and sustainably.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly management accounts
- Submit evidence-based claims to grant providers including Sport England
- Maintain financial controls and ensure compliance with relevant regulations
- Support year-end processes including liaising with external accountants and submissions to companies house
Budgeting & Planning
- Lead the annual budgeting process
- Work collaboratively with individual team members to set their budgets
- Monitor performance against budgets and provide regular updates
- Identify risks, opportunities, and areas for improvement
Payroll & Financial Operations
- Manage and oversee payroll processes for employees and contractors
- Oversee day-to-day financial operations including invoices, payments, reconciliations
- Lead for Surfing England office functions, including personal expenses, utility bills, service contracts, rent and rates
Person Specification
You will need to enjoy working in a small business environment with a passionate team of people. This means being dynamic, adapting to changing business needs and being able to prioritise your time and organisational budgets. You’ll get personal fulfilment from helping enable projects that make a difference to people’s lives and advance the sport of surfing.
- Proven experience in a finance management role
- Strong knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
- Experience managing payroll processes
- Understands the challenges of working in a dynamic small business environment
- Bookkeeping or accounting qualification
- Strong working knowledge of Sage
- Ability to work independently in a part-time capacity
- Experience working in a not-for-profit, sport, or membership organisation
- Understanding of funding environments (e.g. Sport England and grant funding)
- Enjoy working with small, collaborative teams & helping people set and manage budgets
Working Arrangements
Part-time: 2 or 3 days per week (hours can be split across multiple days to accommodate a variety of working patterns). Combination of office and home based – Tuesdays and Thursdays are office days.
