As a Junior Mechanical Engineer at Surface Renewables, you will play a hands-on technical role supporting the design and delivery of our integrated renewable systems — spanning radiant heating and cooling, mechanical ventilation, solar, and smart controls. This is an excellent opportunity for a talented MEng graduate who has 1-2 years experience and is looking to build a career in the fast-growing renewables sector.

Day-to-day you will be producing CAD drawings and panel layouts, running heat load, airflow, and solar consumption calculations, and feeding your technical outputs into the wider quoting and design process. You will collaborate closely with installers throughout the UK, ensuring they fully understand your designs and the products they require. You will be eager to learn and we will invest in your development, providing training and mentoring to build your understanding of our products and the broader renewables industry. This is a role where curiosity and the ability to learn quickly will be valued above all else. Reporting into the Technical Director and supported by the Head of Design, you will have real guidance as you grow your knowledge and skills.

Surface Renewables supply integrated renewable heating, cooling and ventilation systems to installers across the UK. Our installation company Ramki installs and maintains these systems. You will work for projects across both organisations. We are passionate about innovation and committed to simplifying complex concepts, enabling customers to easily grasp what they need. Surface Renewables is an industry leader, partnering with top manufacturers across Europe to deliver cutting-edge products to the UK market. We specialise in integrated systems and pride ourselves on exceptional customer service, ensuring our customers receive the best products supported by robust technical assistance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design Analysis and Development: Review project specifications and drawings to understand the scope and technical requirements of renewable system installations. Produce accurate CAD drawings, technical schematics, and panel layouts across our four product areas — radiant heating and cooling, mechanical ventilation, solar, and smart controls — working to specifications provided by the Head of Design.
  • Technical Calculations and Quoting Support: Carry out technical calculations across all system types: heat load and system sizing for radiant systems, airflow and ventilation design calculations, solar consumption reports and generation estimates, and control logic inputs for smart controls packages. Feed technical outputs and product specifications into the quoting process, supporting the team in producing accurate and timely quotes for customers.
  • Continuous Improvement: Develop and refine calculation templates and design standards to improve the accuracy and consistency of technical outputs. Review business reports to spot opportunities to improve ways of working.
  • Customer Engagement: Collaborate with clients and project stakeholders to address inquiries, clarify cost estimates, and actively participate in meetings and presentations. Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, representing Surface Renewables with professionalism and integrity.
  • Industry Knowledge and Research: Develop a thorough understanding of our full product range — radiant heating and cooling, mechanical ventilation, solar, and smart controls — including the technical principles behind each system and how they integrate together. Receive structured training on our innovative radiant heating and cooling system — a flagship product that sets Surface Renewables apart in the market — developing the ability to explain, design, and specify it confidently for installers.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • MEng or MSc in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • A solid academic grounding in mechanical design principles; an interest in or exposure to renewable energy systems is a plus but not essential.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit or similar packages.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills; comfortable working with calculations and technical data.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for innovation and continuous learning in the renewable sector.
  • Must have the right to work in the UK; we are not able to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
