As part of the Sureserve family, we support clients in the Design, Build, Finance, and Operation of Low Carbon Transition Projects. Our services cover the entire lifecycle—from carbon baselining to post‑project monitoring and verification—ensuring the highest standards of sector governance in renewable energy solutions and sustainable project development.

Working to a hybrid working model from the office in Nottingham, this is a senior technical leadership role responsible for setting, governing, and continuously improving engineering design across our renewable and low‑carbon energy projects. Acting as the organization’s technical authority, you will provide oversight and assurance across Solar PV, BESS, District Heat Networks, and Heat Pump technologies. You will balance strong engineering governance with practical, hands‑on leadership to ensure designs are safe, compliant, optimized, and commercially aligned. This is a key leadership role within a growing SME environment, requiring a consistent presence in the Nottingham office.

  • Engineering Leadership & Technical Authority
    • Serve as the senior technical authority for all engineering design activities.
    • Review, challenge, and approve engineering calculations, drawings, and technical documentation.
    • Establish and improve engineering standards, QA processes, and design governance.
    • Ensure designs are safe, compliant, buildable, and commercially robust.
    • Own complex technical matters, escalating only material risks where appropriate.
  • Engineering Function Management
    • Lead the engineering team, ensuring effective workload allocation and delivery to programme.
    • Manage resource planning, utilisation and capability development across the project portfolio.
    • Align design outputs with programme milestones and cost objectives alongside Project Management and Commercial teams.
    • Build scalable engineering capability and contribute directly to projects as a hands‑on leader.
  • Line Management & Professional Standards
    • Hold full line management responsibility, including performance management and development.
    • Build a culture of accountability, ownership, and pride in engineering output.
    • Promote a professional culture aligned with Engineering Council principles.
    • Support engineers in progressing toward CEng, IEng or EngTech status.
  • Project, Commercial & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Contribute to feasibility, optioneering, and technical due diligence.
    • Support value engineering and technical risk management throughout the project lifecycle.
    • Provide senior technical engagement with clients, supply chain partners, DNOs, and regulatory stakeholders.
    • Strengthen technical relationships with key suppliers and delivery partners.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or actively working toward chartership with demonstrable progression.
  • Demonstrable success in engineering design and delivery roles.
  • Strong technical foundation in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or Building services.
  • Proven experience leading or managing engineering teams and approving technical documentation.
  • Deep understanding of UK engineering standards and safe design principles.

Highly Desirable

  • Experience in renewable/low‑carbon infrastructure (Solar PV, BESS, Heat Pumps, Heat Networks).
  • Experience implementing engineering standards or QA frameworks.
  • Experience engaging with DNOs and regulatory authorities.
