About the role: Associate Director, Energy Analyst – full‑time, London office. The role supports Atelier Ten’s integrated environmental design, building services engineering and lighting design consultancy. You will deliver environmental and sustainability advice across a wide range of projects, from master planning to detailed building design, using advanced simulation tools and building regulations expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expertise in building physics, energy analysis, operational carbon, thermal performance and thermal comfort.
- Lead and maintain project workstreams for energy and thermal analysis, delivering accurate, timely outcomes using industry benchmarks and internal standards.
- Consult on sustainability, environmental design, building regulations (PartL, PartO, CIBSE, ASHRAE, ISO) and net‑zero carbon/energy strategies.
- Use analytical tools (IES‑VE, Rhino, Grasshopper, EnergyPlus, Open Studio, Design Builder, MSExcel, Python‑based tools) to simulate building service systems and deliver findings.
- Prepare and present reports, results, and presentations that clearly communicate recommendations to internal teams, external collaborators and clients.
- Act as the key point of contact for external collaborators and clients on all energy and thermal workstreams.
- Develop and disseminate knowledge through workshops, conferences, and internal knowledge‑transfer activities.
- Support Technical Directors in resource planning, project pipeline management, and future capability development.
- Manage profitability, technical capability, and financial performance of energy specialists; identify and report shortfalls.
- Conduct regular meetings with the energy analyst team to discuss technical issues, staff matters, and delivery, encouraging knowledge sharing.
- Lead staff training, tool development, and standardisation of methods to improve quality and effectiveness of energy workstreams.
- Represent the firm in outreach activities, generate business leads, and support marketing and business‑development initiatives.
Management and Leadership Duties
- Organise and delegate project tasks, maintain control of timelines and budgets, and manage client relationships.
- Present updates and status reports to Directors and Technical Directors.
- Recruit, organise, and schedule specialist support within the team and external contractors.
- Develop and implement fee arrangements for energy‑related project scopes.
- Facilitate long‑term talent growth by providing training, career progression opportunities, and external speaking/lecturing engagements.
Technical Competencies
- 7+ years of experience with PartL compliance, energy strategies and net‑zero design for a variety of building types in the UK.
- In‑depth knowledge of thermal comfort standards and regulations (PartO, CIBSE TM52, TM59, ASHRAE and ISO standards).
- Expertise in operational energy performance assessments (CIBSE TM54, NABERS UK, ASHRAE90.1).
- Proficiency in IES‑VE, EnergyPlus, Open Studio, Design Builder and the ApacheHVAC module; experience with other similar tools is acceptable.
- Strong analytical review skills, producing consistent, verifiable, and replicable deliverables.
- Ability to create and standardise new methods, tools and references to improve the quality of the team’s work.
- Knowledge of sustainability benchmarking systems (BREEAM, LEED, Living Building Challenge) and experience with metering and control of key building service systems.
Professional Qualifications and Personal Skills
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a related field.
- Level5 Low‑Carbon Energy Assessors accreditation (or equivalent) is expected.
- Strong leadership, teamwork, and ability to work with limited supervision.
- Excellent prioritisation, strategic thinking, and the ability to structure information for senior managers.
- Strong interpersonal, business acumen and communication skills.
- Effective IT skills in MSExcel and simulation tools; programming knowledge (Python, VBA) and CFD/FEM modeling are advantageous.
- All of the above skills should enable the applicant to develop, coordinate, and deliver low‑energy strategies across global scales of projects.
Additional Capabilities and Selections
- Prior knowledge of CIBSE Guides, TM39, TM52, TM54, TM59, TM61, TM63, CP1, AM10, AM11, AM13, AM16, AM17.
- Familiarity with ASHRAE Blackbooks and handbooks (Standards55,62.1,90.1,189).
- Experience with CFD, FEM, HVAC system design.
- BREEAMAP, LEEDAP, BEMP or similar chartership is preferred.
