About the Role

An excellent opportunity is available for a Veterinary Surgeon in Wigan, Greater Manchester, within a busy small animal practice offering a varied caseload, strong clinical support and a genuine focus on patient care.

The position offers a salary of up to £70,000 FTE, depending on experience, alongside generous CPD support, paid professional memberships and a contributory pension.

The practice is flexible around working patterns, with no fixed rota or set hours. The team is open to discussing a working week that suits the successful candidate, with participation in 1 in 5 Saturdays, 9:00am–3:00pm, alongside the agreed weekly hours.

A strong emphasis is placed on work-life balance, with 20–30-minute consultations and dedicated daily administration time built into the diary to help colleagues finish on time.

About the Practice

The practice is a busy small animal veterinary environment with an interesting and varied caseload, supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team.

The veterinary team includes five Veterinary Surgeons, working alongside eight Registered Veterinary Nurses, five receptionists and three Veterinary Care Assistants.

The nursing team has particularly strong clinical expertise, including three advanced diploma-qualified nurses, a nurse with a Certificate in Anaesthesia, an ECC-qualified nurse and an ISFM Feline Nurse.

The team places a strong emphasis on gold-standard patient care, evidence-based medicine and clinical auditing, creating an environment where high standards and continuous improvement are encouraged.

Nurse-led consultations are also part of the working model, allowing the wider team to make full use of their clinical skills and expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality first-opinion veterinary care across a varied small animal caseload.

  • Deliver thorough consultations and clinical assessments.

  • Manage routine medical and surgical cases confidently.

  • Build strong relationships with clients and provide clear, compassionate communication.

  • Work collaboratively with Veterinary Surgeons, RVNs, VCAs and reception colleagues.

  • Contribute to evidence-based clinical decision-making and high standards of patient care.

  • Participate in clinical discussions, audits and improvements to practice protocols.

  • Develop and manage areas of individual clinical interest.

  • Contribute ideas and help identify opportunities to improve patient care and practice processes.

  • Maintain accurate clinical records and complete administrative responsibilities within allocated diary time.

  • Participate in the 1 in 5 Saturday rota, 9:00am–3:00pm.
