About the Role
An exciting opportunity is available for a Head Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) or an experienced RVN ready to take the next step into a Head Nurse position in Friern Barnet, North London.
This is a varied leadership role offering the opportunity to combine hands‑on nursing with clinical coaching, nurse clinics and team development. The position would suit an experienced RVN who enjoys taking responsibility, supporting colleagues and contributing to the continued growth of a progressive small animal practice.
Salary: Up to £40,000 pro rata, depending on experience
Hours: 40 hours per week
Working pattern: 1 in 3 Saturdays with time off in lieu
OOH: None
Part-time: Considered for the right candidate

About the Practice
The practice is a growing small animal veterinary practice in North West London, with a supportive and collaborative team focused on maintaining high clinical standards and delivering excellent patient and client care.
The established team includes 3.5 Veterinary Surgeons, 1 RVN, 3 Student Veterinary Nurses, 1 Veterinary Care Assistant and a Practice Manager, alongside visiting orthopaedic surgeons and an ultrasonographer.

The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting the nursing team and helping shape the continued development of the practice.
Responsibilities

Provide high-quality clinical nursing care across a varied small animal caseload

Lead and support the nursing team as Head RVN

Coach and mentor Student Veterinary Nurses

Run dedicated nurse clinics, including obesity, diabetic and behavioural consultations

Undertake Schedule 3 procedures, including dental scale and polish

Perform second vaccinations and post‑operative checks

Support the development of nursing standards and clinical protocols

Encourage excellent communication and teamwork across the practice

Contribute to the ongoing development and growth of the practice

Promote high standards of patient welfare and client care

Lead by example and support a positive, collaborative team culture
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be an experienced RVN with strong communication skills and a genuine interest in taking on greater responsibility.
Applications are welcomed from both established Head RVNs and experienced RVNs who are ready to progress into their first leadership role.
Previous experience as a Clinical Coach would be advantageous, although candidates interested in developing these skills will be supported.
They should be enthusiastic, organised and confident working independently while also enjoying the collaborative nature of a close‑kitted veterinary team.
A willingness to contribute to clinical development, mentor colleagues and help shape the future direction of the nursing team is essential.
