Veterinary Surgeon - Halifax, West Yorkshire

About the Role

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Veterinary Surgeon in Halifax, West Yorkshire, offering a salary of up to £70,000 FTE depending on experience.

This is an excellent opportunity for a confident GP vet looking to take the next step in their career within an established, clinically strong practice. The role would particularly suit a Veterinary Surgeon with a surgical bias, although a strong all-rounder will also be considered.

The position is ideally 40 hours per week, including 1 in 3 Saturdays, with flexibility around the rota to create a working pattern that suits both the candidate and practice. There are no Sundays and no out-of-hours requirements.

About the Practice

The practice is a long-established, locally owned small animal veterinary surgery with a strong reputation within the Halifax community.

The experienced team has exceptionally low turnover, with many colleagues having been with the practice for 10 years or more. The clinical team includes an experienced Veterinary Surgeon with approximately 30 years' experience, alongside 4 RVNs, 2 VCAs and 3 Student Veterinary Nurses.

The practice receives referrals for advanced orthopaedic work thanks to access to a visiting Veterinary Surgeon who performs complex procedures, including hip replacement surgery.

This provides an unusual opportunity for a first-opinion Veterinary Surgeon to work alongside advanced surgical expertise and gain exposure to more complex cases while continuing to develop their own clinical interests.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality first-opinion veterinary care across a varied small animal caseload.

  • Manage routine medical and surgical cases confidently.

  • Conduct consultations, examinations and diagnostic work-ups.

  • Perform routine surgical procedures appropriate to experience.

  • Develop treatment plans and provide continuity of patient care.

  • Work collaboratively with the experienced veterinary and nursing team.

  • Communicate effectively and compassionately with clients.

  • Maintain high standards of patient welfare and clinical care.

  • Develop and pursue individual clinical interests.

  • Contribute ideas to improve services and clinical standards.

  • Support the continued growth and development of the practice.

  • Work alongside visiting clinicians and benefit from exposure to advanced orthopaedic procedures where appropriate.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Veterinary Surgeon and confident GP all-rounder who is comfortable managing routine medical and surgical cases.

A surgical bias would be particularly advantageous, although the practice is open to candidates with a range of clinical interests.

The successful candidate will ideally:

  • Hold RCVS registration or be eligible to register.

  • Have solid UK small animal general practice experience.

  • Be confident with routine medical and surgical cases.

  • Have strong clinical decision-making skills.

  • Be proactive and enthusiastic about professional development.

  • Bring new ideas and a positive approach to practice development.

  • Have excellent communication and client-care skills.

  • Enjoy working collaboratively within an experienced team.

  • Be keen to develop specialist interests through CPD or certificates.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary up to £70,000 FTE depending on experience

  • Ideally 40 hours per week

  • 1 in 3 Saturdays

  • Flexible, negotiable rota

  • No OOH

  • No Sundays

  • CPD strongly encouraged

  • Certificate support available

  • Paid professional membership fees

  • Access to colleague reward and discount schemes

  • 20% discount at Vets4Pets, Pets at Home and the Groom Room

  • Support from a highly experienced clinical team

  • Exposure to advanced orthopaedic cases

  • Opportunities to develop surgical interests

Why Apply

This Veterinary Surgeon job in Halifax offers an excellent opportunity to join a stable, experienced practice with a genuinely supportive team and very low colleague turnover.

The role provides the best of both worlds: a varied first-opinion caseload combined with access to advanced surgical expertise, including exposure to hip replacement procedures and complex orthopaedic cases.

With a flexible rota, no OOH, no Sundays and strong CPD and certificate support, the position offers an attractive balance between clinical development and personal wellbeing.

It is particularly well suited to a Veterinary Surgeon who wants to develop a surgical bias, introduce new ideas and help an established practice grow, while having the support of an experienced team around them.
