A blind woman in her 30s is seeking a reliable, friendly personal assistant to support her in accessing the community with her baby for up to 10 hours a week. The role is primarily about practical and social support, enabling her to get out safely and confidently. This may include accompanying her to appointments, baby groups, play spaces, shops and walks, as well as providing practical assistance to support her with caring for her baby when in the community.

Summary of Duties:

  • Guiding and sighted assistance when out in the community
  • Helping with orientation in new environments
  • Supporting safe travel with a car seat, pram and baby carrier
  • Attending mother and baby groups and supporting mother and child to access the sessions by describing visual content
  • Supporting mother and child to access play spaces, providing visual descriptions to enable them to interact with the environment
  • Transporting to activities
  • Sorting items by colour
  • Assisting with household upkeep, e.g. cleaning, basic DIY, gardening
  • Helping with grocery shopping
  • Supporting with the choosing and buying of clothes
  • Assisting with dog walking
  • Reading the post and other printed documents aloud, filling out forms on her behalf when needed
  • Accompanying to appointments and on trips when necessary (which may include overnight stays on occasion)

Skills, Qualities and Experience:

Essential:

  • Must be caring, patient, friendly and punctual with excellent verbal description skills
  • Need to be comfortable around animals (particularly dogs) but be prepared to not interact with her guide dog
  • Must have access to own car

Desirable:

  • Experience in working with visually impaired people
  • Experience in a similar role
  • Evidence of a DBS check that has been undertaken in the last year

Pay Rate: £12.71 per hour

Hours: Up to 10 hours a week. Times and days will be agreed in advance.
