Supply Heroes are working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Sutton Coldfield that is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Year 1 SEND Teaching Assistant to join their team. This is a rewarding opportunity to support a young pupil with a visual impairment, helping them access learning and develop independence within a supportive classroom environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the pupil’s educational journey by adapting learning activities, using specialist resources, and working closely with teaching staff and external professionals. About the Role

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a Year 1 pupil with a visual impairment
  • Support the pupil to access learning through adapted and accessible activities
  • Use tactile resources and specialist equipment to support engagement and understanding
  • Promote the pupil’s independence while ensuring their safety within the classroom and around the school
  • Anticipate and manage potential risks when the pupil is moving independently
  • Work closely with the class teacher and specialist professionals to deliver tailored support
  • Provide regular feedback to the class teacher on the pupil’s progress and wellbeing
  • Support the creation of an inclusive and positive learning environment
  • Participate in training and professional development, including opportunities to learn Braille and use specialist equipment

The Right Candidate

Essential:

  • Experience working with a young person with visual impairment
  • Experience using tactile resources to support learning
  • Experience tailoring learning activities to ensure they are accessible
  • Ability to anticipate and mitigate risk for a pupil moving around independently
  • Ability to work effectively with specialist professionals
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to provide feedback to the class teacher
  • Willingness to develop new skills, including learning Braille
  • Ability to use, or willingness to learn to use, specialist equipment (e.g., visualiser)
  • Good judgement in knowing when to step in to support and when to encourage independence

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Braille
  • Knowledge of the Key Stage 1 (KS1) curriculum
