Community Care Assistants in the Homes and Day Centres are members of a caring team whose task it is to assist people to live to their fullest potential. The job is about enabling people as far as they are able to care for themselves rather than being cared for. This requires an acceptance that people have the right to take considered risks and make decisions about their own lives.
Community Care Assistants spend a considerable amount of their working time in direct contact with individuals using the service and so their actions and attitudes have a major impact on the quality of the service offered. It is, therefore, essential that Community Care Assistants are sensitive to people’s needs, and are understanding, patient, practical and respectful to the rights of people to privacy, dignity and confidentiality.
Particular regard must be shown to a person’s cultural and religious needs in all aspects of their care.
Much of the work can be difficult and demanding though rewarding as well. Much of it is also of a very intimate and personal nature. The people who come to Homes and Day Centres may need considerable assistance, which requires patience and a practical approach from the Community Care Assistant. Community Care Assistants must help to make the Home or Day Centre a pleasant place to be and must be considerate and caring towards the people using the service.
The main duties of Community Care Assistants are attached and derive from the principle that people should be able to expect the same kind of good care in our Homes and Centres that they might expect in their own homes.
