Supermassive Games has produced some of the most recognizable and compelling storytelling titles in the world of AAA games. We are looking for a Technical Director to join us at Supermassive Games. This role is based at our Guildford studio. As Technical Director you will be at the heart of how we make games. Working closely with the Creative Director, Executive Producer, and other discipline leads, you will own the technical vision for your project, ensuring our tech supports our creative ambitions while keeping things performant, scalable, and high quality. The role blends hands‑on technical leadership with team mentorship and cross‑discipline collaboration, requiring deep real‑time development expertise, strong communication skills, and a genuine passion for helping teams do their best work.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the overall technical vision for the project, in line with creative and production goals, acting as the primary technical point of contact for stakeholders.
  • Work with the programming team to provide pragmatic, well‑considered technical solutions that support both game features and content workflows, balancing innovation with production risk and keeping the team unblocked.
  • Own and drive the project’s technical performance strategy across platforms, defining memory budgets, rendering targets, and optimisation approaches across PC and console, and ensuring performance standards are met at every stage of production.
  • Act as a key technical advisor to production and project planning, providing accurate scoping input, identifying technical risk early, and contributing to milestone planning and resourcing.
  • Drive high standards of code quality, architecture, and engineering practice across the programming team, providing clear direction and meaningful technical review.
  • Stay actively engaged with the evolution of Unreal Engine, evaluating new capabilities against production readiness and guiding the team on when and how to make the most of new features.
  • Champion technical quality and a culture of craft across the studio, helping to create an environment where engineers at every level can do their best work.

Requirements

  • Extensive game development experience with multiple shipped titles, including cross‑platform development and optimisation.
  • Deep understanding of game engines, with hands‑on knowledge of Unreal Engine 5.
  • Strong C++ programming skills, with a director‑level perspective on architecture, engine systems design, and setting engineering standards across a team.
  • Proven ability to define and own a technical performance strategy in a multi‑platform setting, including GPU/CPU profiling, optimisation, and resolving common performance challenges.
  • Strong people leadership skills, with experience managing and developing engineers in a studio environment, setting direction, giving feedback, and building a high‑performing team culture.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to translate complex technical concepts clearly for both engineers and non‑technical creative stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and decision‑making skills, pragmatic, clear‑headed, and solutions‑oriented, even under pressure.

Benefits

  • 25 days annual leave (3 of which are used when we close the studio for our end‑of‑year break).
  • Private Medical Insurance (BUPA).
  • Medicash assistance (including dental and optician support).
  • Life Assurance (6 × annual salary).
  • Pension Scheme.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Income Protection.
  • Enhanced Family Leave (maternity and paternity pay).
