The Role

As a Financial Controller at Superdry, you will take a hands-on and highly practical role in strengthening, documenting, and improving the finance and control environment across a dynamic, design-led, multi-channel retail business. Superdry operates with complex global supply chains, multiple channels (Retail, Ecommerce, Wholesale), and fast-paced trading cycles—all of which require robust, well-documented financial processes and consistently executed controls.

This role is not just about oversight—you will work directly with team members across finance and operations to ensure controls are properly understood, fully documented, and embedded across the business. You will support the Group Finance Director in driving improvements across operational finance, financial reporting, and tax, while also helping to coordinate the year-end audit and ensure the business is fully prepared with high-quality, audit-ready documentation. You will also oversee VAT compliance, including the review and management of VAT processes. You will also be accountable for reconciling the VAT balance sheet within CODA and ensuring all necessary adjustments are accurately recorded.

This role reports directly to the Head of Financial Reporting and Tax, with a dotted line to the Finance Director. This is not a purely oversight or project-management position—your day-to-day work will involve getting into the detail, supporting team members, and ensuring financial processes and controls are fully understood, properly documented, and operating effectively. This is a broad, varied, and highly practical role requiring technical expertise, flexibility, and the ability to own tasks from start to finish.

You Will

  • Review, document, and enhance finance processes, policies, and internal controls across the organisation.
  • Work hands-on with team members to help them properly document controls, understand requirements, and strengthen the quality and consistency of control execution.
  • Identify control gaps and weaknesses, propose improvements, and help embed best-practice financial governance.
  • Support and partially lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of the annual year-end audit, ensuring clear communication, robust audit files, and timely responses.
  • Troubleshoot issues across operational finance, financial reporting, and tax as required by the Head of Financial Reporting and Tax and the Finance Director.
  • Own tasks end-to-end, from investigation to solution, design to implementation.
  • Collaborate with wider finance teams to improve processes, streamline workflows, and resolve technical or operational challenges.
  • Maintain high-quality documentation, including process maps, control matrices, reconciliations, policies, and audit evidence.
  • Lead and oversee VAT compliance activities, including reviewing VAT reconciliations and returns prepared by the VAT consultants.
  • Reconcile the VAT balance sheet account within CODA and post necessary adjustments.
  • Provide support with financial reporting, particularly the audit of subsidiaries across the world.
  • Assist with ad-hoc finance projects, tax projects, system enhancements, and continuous improvement initiatives as needed.

You Are

  • ACA/ACCA with at least 3 years post qualification experience.
  • A hands-on, detail-driven finance professional who enjoys working directly with processes, systems, and data.
  • Experienced in VAT processes, VAT reconciliations, and VAT compliance, with the ability to oversee and review work completed by junior team members.
  • Comfortable managing and developing juniors, providing guidance, coaching, and oversight.
  • A natural problem solver, able to diagnose issues quickly and deliver pragmatic, well-structured solutions.
  • Experienced in financial control frameworks, process documentation, and internal controls best practice.
  • Comfortable with complex, technical finance environments, ideally with a background in audit, financial reporting, tax, or risk & controls.
  • Flexible and adaptable, able to switch between technical accounting, VAT management, control reviews, operational finance support, and project tasks.
  • A strong communicator and collaborator, able to coach team members and explain financial controls clearly.
  • Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and drive tasks to completion.
  • Motivated by improving systems, fixing issues, and creating a robust finance environment.
