SuperDielectrics (SD) is pioneering a breakthrough battery technology designed for the high-power markets of the future, supporting the global shift to electrification. Our water-based batteries deliver market-leading performance through a novel polymer separator, combined with zinc halide electroactive species and carbon-based porous electrodes. To accelerate commercialisation, SD operates a fully integrated product development model - from advanced materials through to cells, modules and packs - underpinned by in-house battery management systems.
We are seeking a simulation and modelling engineer to lead the multiphysics-based computation of key aspects of our technology. Working across multiscale cells (from development to commercial scale), you will interact closely with the product and application teams to model batteries with a strong emphasis on cell performance and degradation. Building on this, and in further collaborating with the product scale-up team, you will deliver insights into the cell-to-pack technology and provide data-driven recommendations on challenges associated with pack-level management. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the technology across the full tech-stack and throughout the development process.
You will support the strategic lead and commercial teams in translating technical information into consequential business intelligence, directly informing cost models and broader business strategy. This is a rare opportunity to join a high-growth, entrepreneurial business at a pivotal stage. While experience in battery technologies is advantageous, we actively welcome candidates from adjacent fields - bringing fresh perspectives to complex engineering challenges. In return, we offer a world-class environment to develop deep expertise in next-generation energy storage.
Key Responsibilities- Accountable for leading the development and maintenance of multiscale physics-based models of aqueous batteries, specifically targeting electrochemistry and pack-level management of physical phenomena.
- Responsible for designing and maintaining a robust library of multiscale models spanning the full technology stack, from laboratory-, to production-scale units and the full battery pack.
- Interact closely with electrochemists to translate experimental results into critical parameters for model development.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to design and implement test procedures that generate data to validate model accuracy.
- Interact with researchers to analyse data, model cell chemistry and identify patterns in degradation.
- Translate consequential insights from modelling to inform actionable practical solutions.
- Coordinate with engineers and designers to translate performance analysis into data-driven hardware solutions.
- Support Data Lead in analysis to drive continuous improvement in data processing to ensure high-quality, actionable insights.
- Work closely with commercial teams to play a significant role in business development projects.
- Translate technical aspects of the product prototypes into business insights via cost modelling aligned with customer requirements.
- Champion safety, effective training and adherence to SD safety rules and best practices.
You will have/be:
- Masters or PhD qualified in a related engineering field, with a strong understanding of electrochemical/multiphysics modelling or simulation; alternatively, have demonstrable experience in a similar role from a related field of expertise.
- Demonstrable experience in physics-based modelling of electrochemical energy storage devices.
- Experience of scaling 1D insights to pack-level outcomes in a business environment will be viewed as advantageous.
- Further, experience in aqueous battery systems will be viewed as advantageous.
- Demonstrable experience in physics-based/mathematical modelling software.
- Experience handling and analysing large datasets will be viewed as advantageous.
- Demonstrable experience in shaping experimental work to extract key parameters for models to drive continuous product insights and improvement.
- Expertise in data visualisation with the ability to present complex technical data in a clear manner that effectively communicates insights to diverse audiences and stakeholders.
- A naturally collaborative approach, thriving in tackling tricky technical problems with an open, intellectually curious, and driven team across the tech-stack.
- Excited by turning rigorous science into working solutions, with a pragmatic mindset in a team focused on delivering meaningful commercial impact.
