Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, a CQC Outstanding rated organisation, is looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Urgent Care Assessment Team (UCAT) based in Northampton. This role offers a £40,000 welcome bonus, paid over the first two years in post, and a comprehensive benefits package as outlined in the Candidate Pack.
Job Overview
UCAT provides a 24‑hour, seven‑day a week service conducting mental health assessments following referrals from recognised sources and responding to the needs of the home treatment caseload. The Consultant Psychiatrist acts as a gatekeeper to acute inpatient care, delivers rapid response and intensive, flexible interventions, and ensures service users are linked to continuing care.
Responsibilities
- Undertake mental health assessments and respond to home treatment caseloads.
- Act as a gatekeeper to acute inpatient care.
- Provide rapid, intensive, flexible interventions for service users, families and carers.
- Address social issues surrounding crisis from the outset.
- Adopt an assertive approach to engagement.
- Provide practical problem‑solving help.
- Administer and supervise medication.
- Deliver time‑limited interventions that remain flexible to varying service users’ needs.

- Ensure care is linked to further continuing care services.

Primary Objectives of UCAT
- Offer an assessment service for residents of Northamptonshire who, immediately prior to UCAT involvement, have been assessed as requiring admission to hospital.
- Provide intensive community‑based treatment to clients in the acute phase of mental illness, thereby reducing the need for hospital admission.
- Facilitate early discharge from hospital where admission has already been necessary.
- Secure appropriate follow‑up care for the client once the acute phase has been alleviated.
- Be fully integrated into the Northamptonshire mental health system and community as a whole.
