Here in Sunderland, we have a range of roles to help and support people who become homeless. We have realigned the Housing Options Team to ensure we are well placed to meet the needs of people who are street homeless as well as those threatened with homelessness. Our ambition is to ensure everyone is supported to move towards, and successfully maintain, independent living.

For many, this journey is not a straight line. To meet these varied and often complex needs, we have expanded our team and introduced a range of specialist roles to ensure individuals receive the right support at each stage of their journey to a safe and secure home. As part of this continued commitment and in support of the Supported Housing Improvement Programme (SHIP), Sunderland City Council is seeking to appoint a Tenancy Sustainment Officer.

About the Role

As a Tenancy Sustainment Officer, you will provide a comprehensive and proactive support package to individuals who have moved on from short-term or emergency accommodation. You will also play a key role in preventing homelessness by supporting people to sustain their current accommodation and avoid repeat applications.

Working with SHIP and Housing Options colleagues, you will:

  • Support individuals transitioning from supported, temporary, or emergency accommodation into settled homes.
  • Work closely with the SHIP Manager to assist in improving the quality, safety, and sustainability of supported housing placements.
  • Ensure tenants have the skills, knowledge, and confidence required for successful independent living.
  • Identify early signs of tenancy breakdown and intervene promptly both in supported housing settings and places they move on to.
  • Collaborate with a wide range of internal and external partners to ensure the right support is in place.

About You

The successful candidate will:

  • Understand the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals, including those with complex needs.
  • Have a compassionate, person-centred approach.
  • Be experienced in support planning and able to adapt your approach to meet different situations.
  • Have knowledge of effective housing solutions and homelessness prevention.
  • Be confident in building partnerships with a range of agencies, including supported housing providers.
  • Work closely with other roles including the Rough Sleeper Coordinator, Outreach Team, Temporary Accommodation & Move-On Officers.
