We are looking to appoint a 12 month fixed term full time Digital Inclusion Officer working across the City, alongside colleagues in the Smart Cities Team. Sunderland City Council has a strong commitment to digital inclusion to ensure that no one and nowhere is left behind in the digital world. The existing Digital Inclusion Action Plan concludes in March 2026 and will be replaced by a new Digital Inclusion Strategy for the City. This strategy introduces additional functions and responsibilities for the Smart City Team, aligning with four cross-cutting themes: employment, education, economy, and health, whilst addressing key challenges relating to access to data and devices, building digital skills and media literacy, improving confidence, providing accessible digital online services, co-ordinating digital inclusion initiatives and securing external investment.

Responsibilities:

  • Planning and delivering engaging online and face-to-face digital inclusion sessions, events and campaigns for residents and staff.
  • Working in partnership with council teams, community organisations and volunteers to support people to build digital confidence and skills.
  • Coordinating digital support services, including device and data support, Digital Health Hubs, and 1:1 assistance.
  • Promoting and supporting the uptake of digital tools, technologies and ways of working across the organisation and communities.
  • Gathering insight, feedback and performance data to evidence impact and shape future digital inclusion activity.

Additional information:

The post will report to the Digital Inclusion Lead, be able to manage their own workload, as well as act as active Team member. The work will combine centre-based work (City Hall, IT Village, Ground Floor) with outreach activities at Digital Health Hubs and other VCS locations. The Smart City Team are currently agile working however, full time employees are required to attend their place of work at City Hall, Sunderland at least two days per week so an element of your work may be undertaken from home.
