Sunderland City Council has an ambitious City Plan which sets the framework for the City’s ongoing regeneration to help ensure we serve our communities to the highest standards possible. The Plan takes us up to 2030 with some major milestones having already been achieved including, the completion and occupation of the new City Hall, the Northern Spire bridge and transport corridor, Riverside Sunderland development on the former Vaux site which includes a new car park. More projects are on course to open this year such as the development of a Culture House and pedestrian bridge across the River Wear.

Are you ready to lead and shape a positive safety culture across a diverse and dynamic organisation? We’re looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Health and Safety Manager to join our team and make a real impact on the wellbeing of our employees, residents, and communities.

About the Role

This is a key strategic role within Sunderland City Council, responsible for driving excellence in health, safety, and wellbeing standards. You will lead a team of professionals and provide expert advice and guidance across all service areas, supporting compliance, continuous improvement, and a proactive safety culture.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and implement corporate health and safety strategies and policies
  • Advise senior leaders and services on legislation and best practice
  • Oversee risk assessments, audits, and incident investigations
  • Lead on training, communications, and employee engagement
  • Represent the council with regulators and external partners

About You

  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and Chartered Membership of IOSH
  • Proven experience managing health and safety in a complex organisation
  • Strong leadership, communication, and influencing skills
  • Ability to work strategically while also supporting operational delivery

Ideally you will have experience of working within an organisation which has a broad range and diversity of risks that may include Social Care, Schools, Grounds Maintenance, Waste management, Events, Construction Design Management, and contractor vetting. You will need to have excellent communication skills, be an effective team player with an adaptable approach enabling you to build strong and lasting relationships with a range of people.
