Overview

Are you a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer looking to lead meaningful infrastructure projects and shape the future of Sunderland’s transport network?

We’re seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to join our Bridges and Structures Team as Group Engineer. This is a key leadership role within the Highway Design and Infrastructure Section, offering the opportunity to manage a diverse portfolio of bridges and highway structures across the city.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading and supporting a team of technical staff, fostering collaboration and professional development.
  • Signing off technical approvals for bridges and structures on behalf of the Local Highway Authority.
  • Overseeing the design, delivery, and management of construction and maintenance projects.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, CDM regulations, and council policies.
  • Managing budgets, resources, and service delivery in line with financial regulations.
  • Representing the service at public meetings and contributing to strategic planning and risk management.
  • Driving innovation through the use of technology and continuous improvement.

What We’re Looking For

  • Chartered status in Civil or Structural Engineering (ICE or IStructE).
  • Proven experience in managing infrastructure assets, particularly bridges and highway structures.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and guide teams.
  • Sound technical judgement and operational knowledge of engineering standards and practices.
  • A proactive, solution-focused mindset with a commitment to public service and value for money.
  • Ability to work flexibly and adapt to changing priorities and demands.
