(Senior) Android Engineer – Consumer

At SumUp, we’re building a world where merchants can succeed while doing what they truly love. Our mission from day one is simple: give back to local merchants the joy to succeed, thanks to simple and innovative tools.

SumUp is a digital ecosystem dedicated to local entrepreneurs. Our range of solutions answers all our merchants’ challenges; from reservations, through click and collect, deliveries, and digital payment, to the management of their business thanks to intuitive and comprehensive financial analytics.

Your new team

The Consumer tribe – a startup within SumUp – builds products that turn transactions into easier, more engaging, and more meaningful interactions while improving consumers’ financial life. You will have a lot of autonomy to build processes from scratch, solve impactful problems, and shape the future of the team.

You’ll be building our consumer mobile app, providing financial services to consumers in Europe and beyond. You’ll shape how our consumers interact with our growing consumer merchant ecosystem.

In the first few weeks, you’ll dive into the code and learn how to create clean components in our codebase. You’ll use this knowledge to start developing and refining features.

In the first three months, you’ll develop major features that impact our consumer base. You’ll work closely with product and design departments to build features that are maintainable, usable, and beautiful. You’ll help us re-think problems we’ve solved before in a different way as needs evolve.

By the end of your first year, you’ll have a wealth of knowledge about our complex problem domain, as well as its implications in the interface and in the backend – and how to manage it in a clean way.

Working closely with other mobile engineers on setting up and implementing best engineering practices for mobile across the company.

You’ll be great for this position if

  1. You’re familiar with Kotlin and the Android framework (knowledge of Java is a plus).
  2. Worked with agile methodologies, CI/CD, and Pair Programming.
  3. Care about user interaction, usability, and making the interface beautiful.
  4. You strive for clean code but also know how to make your “shortcuts” easy to delete in a crunch.
  5. An ability to understand a bigger problem, design a solution, chunk into workable items, and deliver the solution.
  6. Clear understanding of what to test, why to test it, and how to write good tests.
  7. A mature user-focused approach to engineering.

Why you should join SumUp

  1. The opportunity to work on large scale fintech products used by millions of small businesses around the world.
  2. A dedicated annual Learning & Development budget for attending conferences and/or advancing your career through further education.
  3. Enrollment onto our virtual stock ownership program – you will own a stake in SumUp’s future success.
  4. Competitive Health Insurance Cover with Vitality (including optical, dental).
  5. Life Assurance cover with MetLife for 2 x your salary.
  6. A corporate pension scheme (qualifying earnings).
  7. 28 days’ paid leave + public holidays.
  8. You’ll attend global offsites and/or hackathons, this year we’re all flying out to coastal Albania for our week-long global hackathon.
  9. Break4me – 1 month paid annual leave after 3 years of service.
