We’re looking for an experienced and commercially minded Financial Controller to join our team and take responsibility for the day-to-day financial management of the business.
This is a key role within Sumo, working closely with the Managing Director and Senior Management Team to provide accurate financial information, reporting and insight to support business decisions and future growth.
You will lead our small finance function and work closely with teams across sales, production, purchasing and operations to strengthen financial controls, improve processes and help drive the financial performance of the business.

Provide clear and commercially focused financial guidance to the Managing Director and Senior Management Team, helping to inform business decisions and improve financial understanding across the organisation.
Financial resilience and strong cash management
Maintain effective cash-flow, treasury and working capital management, ensuring the business has the financial resilience to support its continued growth.
High-quality financial insight
Deliver accurate, timely and meaningful management information, providing clear analysis of financial performance, costs, margins and variances to support decision-making.
Strong financial controls and governance
Maintain robust financial controls and processes, ensuring compliance, managing risk and supporting successful year-end and audit processes.
Efficient systems and processes
Identify and implement improvements to financial systems, processes and ways of working, with a particular focus on improving stock control, reporting and operational efficiency.
Effective day-to-day finance operations
Ensure key finance activities, including payroll, purchase ledger, sales ledger, credit control, banking and statutory requirements, are completed accurately, efficiently and on time.
Supporting Sumo's continued growth
Work as an integral member of the Senior Management Team, helping to build the financial foundations needed to support Sumo’s continued growth, investment and development.
The Role
As Financial Controller, you will take responsibility for managing Sumo’s finance department while working closely with colleagues across the wider business.
The role offers a broad range of responsibilities and will include:
- Producing timely and accurate monthly management accounts and financial reports.
- Providing financial analysis and insight to the Managing Director and Senior Management Team.
- Supporting the annual budgeting and forecasting process.
- Managing cash flow, working capital and treasury activities.
- Monitoring customer payments, credit control and supplier payments.
- Overseeing payroll and ensuring wages are processed accurately and on time.
- Managing the relationship with the company’s auditors and supporting the year-end accounts process.
- Managing relationships with the company’s banks, insurers, HMRC and other external financial partners.
- Maintaining strong financial controls and ensuring the business meets its statutory and financial obligations.
- Working closely with production and purchasing to improve stock management, costing and financial reporting.
- Identifying opportunities to improve systems, processes and financial controls across the business.
- Supporting the finance team and providing cover across the wider finance function when required.
- Working closely with sales and production teams to understand performance, costs and margins.
- Providing financial support and analysis for key business decisions and investment opportunities.
- Becoming a valued member of the Senior Management Team and contributing to the wider strategic direction of Sumo.
About You
We’re looking for someone who is commercially curious, hands-on and comfortable taking ownership of the finance function.
You will ideally have:
- A recognised accountancy qualification such as ACA, ACCA or CIMA.
- Previous Financial Controller experience, or experience as a Senior Finance Manager ready to take the next step.
- A background in manufacturing, distribution or wholesale.
- Strong experience of stock management and stock accounting — this is essential.
- Experience working within an SME or growing business.
- Experience of an MRP or ERP implementation or migration from a finance perspective.
- Advanced Excel skills, with the ability to build your own analysis and reports from source data.
- Strong understanding of management accounts, cash flow, budgeting and forecasting.
- Excellent attention to detail and high personal standards.
- A practical and commercially focused approach to problem-solving.
- The confidence to work closely with colleagues across sales, production and operations.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial colleagues.
- The ability to work independently while also being a supportive and collaborative member of the wider team.
