Responsible for gaining a working knowledge of and performing fire protection inspections and 24‑hour service under direct supervision of an Inspection/Service Technician.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Assist Inspectors while they inspect, test, and maintain fire protection systems in accordance with NFPA codes.
  • Develop a knowledge of life safety and NFPA codes and standards.
  • Learn about fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems and their devices, appurtenances, critical components and operations.
  • Perform testing and maintenance under direct supervision of an Inspection/Service Technician.
  • Complete on‑the‑job training documentation each week.
  • Differentiates between inspection deficiencies and service required to correct deficiencies.
  • Understand and follow SFS’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies and procedures; participate in weekly Toolbox talks; know where all related safety documentation is at all times on each project.
  • Attend Inspector training sessions at SFS to stay abreast of changing technology, installation and testing and reporting approaches; classes are scheduled per region, per quarter for a two‑year period.
  • Begin NICET exam cycle application within the third evolution of training; prepare for NICET during the fourth evolution of training; test for NICET during session five or approximately within one year of hire date or enrollment into Inspector training classes.
  • Pass NICET Level II certification in Inspection Testing & Maintenance of Water Based Fire Protection Systems prior to achieving "Inspector" status.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education, Training, Certifications: HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience, Knowledge, Skill Requirements: 0–2 years of experience inspecting fire protection systems preferred. Must be able to work alone and as part of a team. Basic math skills, mechanical aptitude, problem‑solving skills, customer service skills, decision‑making skills, multitasking, ability to meet project schedules, planning and organizing, troubleshooting skills, and training ability required.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Must be able to effectively read, write and communicate in English with employees and customers.

SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE SKILLS

Ability to operate a computer and tablet. Experience with Sales Force and ERP systems preferred.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. Must be able to comply with SFS’s Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, which may also include customer specific requirements based on contractual agreement.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, ascend and descend step stools, ladders and stairs, kneel, lift 50 lbs, reach above and below shoulders, stand and walk for extended periods, see in color, close and far distances, peripheral, depth, and adjust focus. The employee may also be required to balance, crouch, drive, kneel again, lift >50 lbs, sit, stoop, twist, and work at heights.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Frequent local travel and occasional regional and non‑regional travel is required. Employees will work inside and outside in hot/cold temperatures, be exposed to loud noises, cramped quarters, dust, fumes and odors, stand on hard surfaces, and face electrical hazards frequently. Employees may also be exposed to chemicals, moving machinery, uneven and slippery surfaces. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn per company safety policies.
