Role Description
The CNC Programmer/Operator role at SUMMIT - Engineering Excellence is a full‑time, on‑site position based in the West Midlands.
This role involves programming CNC machines from CAD data, setting up and operating CNC equipment, and machining components in various metals, polymers, and composite materials.
The CNC Programmer/Operator will be responsible for selecting appropriate tooling, optimizing machining strategies, and ensuring components meet precise dimensional and quality requirements.
Daily tasks include reading and interpreting engineering drawings, performing machine offsets and adjustments, conducting in‑process inspections, and maintaining accurate production records.
The role also requires routine machine maintenance, adherence to safety and quality standards, and close collaboration with engineers, patternmakers, and other team members to support prototype and production work.
Qualifications
- Strong CNC programming and operation skills, including experience with common CNC controls (e. g., Fanuc, Heidenhain, Siemens) and CAM/CAD software.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, 3D models, and technical specifications, with solid understanding of tolerances and machining processes.
- Hands‑on experience machining a range of materials such as ferrous and non‑ferrous metals, aluminium, tool steels, plastics, composites, and carbon fibre.
- Competence in measurement and inspection using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision tools, with a strong focus on quality and attention to detail.
- Good understanding of shop safety practices, machine maintenance, and lean or continuous improvement principles in an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate with engineers, patternmakers, and production staff and manage workload to meet deadlines.
- Previous experience in automotive, motorsport, aerospace, or related high‑performance engineering sectors is highly beneficial.
- Relevant vocational qualification or apprenticeship in CNC machining, manufacturing engineering, or a closely related discipline is preferred.
