The role: SBC subject tutors are at the heart of what we do, delivering high‑quality, inclusive lessons in a multicultural setting. They are instrumental in helping students become more confident and equipped with 21st‑century communication skills. Tutors promote a culture of respect and understanding and encourage our students to love learning through fun and engaging lessons. At SBC, tutors play a huge role in enriching our students' experience, making their time with us truly unforgettable.
The Subject: The Faculty of Psychology Programme is a two‑week course exploring how the human mind works and how behaviour is shaped. Tutors guide students through cognitive, developmental, and social psychology, encouraging critical thinking about mental processes and human behaviour. Lessons combine theory with hands‑on learning, including experiments, group tasks, and research exercises that bring concepts to life. Collaboration is central, with students sharing ideas, testing hypotheses, and working in teams. Through expert guidance, tutors help students develop observation, analysis, and evaluative skills, providing a strong foundation for future study and careers in psychology, health, education, research, or business.
The Site: Appealing to ambitious students wishing to prepare for future success and to gain an opportunity to spend the summer in the beautiful historic city of Cambridge. Students undertake academic courses, exploring their chosen subject through a series of engaging lectures, tutorials, and industry workshops. Their academic programme sits next to their social programme allowing them to explore Cambridge, take part in college events, wellbeing activities and the greatly enjoyed excursion to London. Dukes Cambridge replicates a city university model based at dedicated university student accommodation giving students a true taste of university living. Students on the college programme are 14‑17 and the capacity is 140 students each week.

Remuneration: You will be paid a gross amount of £815 per week, paid weekly in arrears and subject to statutory deductions. This amount includes holiday pay at 12.07% of your basic weekly pay, where your basic weekly pay is £727.22, and the holiday pay element totals £87.78.
Main Duties:
- Acquaint yourself with the subject syllabus, materials, and resources during the induction period.
- Deliver lessons using the subject syllabus and suitable materials.
- Cultivate a student‑centred learning environment that promotes 21st‑century skills.
- Set projects as guided by the SBC syllabus.
- Support with any scheduled guest speakers, academic workshops or field work as outlined in the weekly programme or syllabus.
- Cater to individual needs, ensuring students reap the full benefits of their course.
- Regularly review students' work, mark assignments thoughtfully, and provide constructive feedback.
- Handle administrative tasks like maintaining class lists, recording work, registering students, and preparing certificates and reports.
- Ensure a positive classroom atmosphere and encourage all students to participate.
- Attend morning meetings with the Director of Studies and other sessions as requested by summer college management.
- Attend student graduation at the end of the course.
- Join CPD (Continued Professional Development) workshops.
- Plan for lesson observations, reflect upon them, and attend feedback sessions with the Director of Studies to discuss potential areas of improvement.
Safeguarding Responsibilities:
- Be committed to the safeguarding and welfare of students in your care.
- Complete online safeguarding training and attend on‑site safeguarding training during induction week.
- Read and understand SBC’s Safeguarding Policy, Staff Handbook, Operations Policy Handbook and Part 1 of Keeping Children Safe in Education (including annexes A earning their trust while maintaining professional boundaries.
General Duties:
- The welfare of students is paramount to us and every member of the team is expected to assist in maintaining the welfare and order at the site, including the accommodation.
- Encourage students to successfully engage in the programme, helping develop their communication, confidence and social skills.
- Ensure clear communication to relevant Summer School Staff regarding student health or wellbeing concerns and complete incident paperwork and records as directed.
- Follow all Health and Safety guidelines and risk assessments.
- Ensure understanding of all Emergency and Fire Evacuation policies, including site evacuation points.
- Interact with students in a manner that's both friendly and professional.
- Help ensure the students meet the Student Code of Conduct; promoting and embodying standards of behaviour that we would expect from our students at all times.
- Remain professional and empathic while managing student behaviour and approach in a positive and constructive manner in line with SBC Student Behaviour Management and Anti‑Bullying policies and procedures.
- Where required, support supervision during meal and break times, and assist with student sign‑ups, sign‑ins and registers.
- Provide support during arrival and departure days both on and off‑site, remaining flexible to tasks required and ensuring a welcoming and positive experience for all students.
- Where required, help with off‑site student transfers. This can include work at airports, train stations and transfer taxis.
- Where required, lead a group of students on off‑site excursions, following pre‑planned itineraries and ensuring thorough supervision throughout.
- Demonstrate flexibility, as is often required in residential roles.
- Assist at any time, whether on duty or not, in an emergency situation.
- Attend training, team meetings and programme briefings as required.
- Share reflections about your experiences over the summer.
