Role Summary
The Operations Data Governance Analyst will be instrumental in delivering data governance for Operations reporting and business processes.
SMBC BI has a three-year plan to bring our KDU Reports and Business Services, including regulatory reports, under data governance.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of data governance facets such as data cataloguing, data quality, data analytics, and data visualisation, with awareness of banking business functions.
The role requires working with stakeholders across all functions to ensure fit-for-purpose data as we leverage best practice across the industry.
The candidate should educate and persuade stakeholders at all levels on the essential nature of this role and the importance of Data Governance.
The ability to challenge the status quo in an empathetic manner, while promoting openness and transparency to nurture business innovation, is expected.
Business Area
The EMEA Data Office sits within the Operations, Planning and Data Department, covering all EMEA entities (including Securities and Banking subsidiaries) and all datasets.
This team defines and implements the EMEA Data Strategy and builds out its data management capabilities.
The framework encompasses cultural, behavioural, procedural, and system transformation to deliver the new strategy.
The initial focus is on governance, Data Architecture, Data Management and Data Quality, with future focus on using Data to drive new ways of working and improved outcomes.
The EMEA Data Office has grown to over 100 members and is expected to grow further in the next 2–3 years.
- Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Engage with Operations and bank-wide stakeholders to implement the SMBC Data Governance Framework across prioritised Reports and Business Services.
- Drive data definition, governance and lineage end-to-end for prioritised Use Cases.
- Monitor changes to business data requirements and ensure change and release management activities are executed for data domains.
- Contribute to meeting industry regulatory expectations for data governance and establish processes that generate accurate, complete, timely and reliable data.
- Work with stakeholders across the Division on the development and implementation of data standards and adoption requirements for EMEA Data.
- Participate in data governance and programme forums to advance the robustness of the Bank-wide data governance framework.
- Collaborate with business, compliance, technology and other groups to ensure data-related requirements are clearly defined and communicated during prioritisation and planning.
- Support investigation of Data Quality Issues and develop remediation plans and recommendations to fix data at the source.
- Knowledge and Skills
Essential
- Working knowledge of data governance, data quality, metadata, profiling, analysis, and data management tools.
- Analytically minded with problem-solving abilities and the capacity to communicate workable solutions.
- Ability to think enterprise-wide rather than siloed to a single business unit.
- Confidence engaging with stakeholders across EMEA to gain buy-in.
- Understanding of Physical, Logical, and Business data Models.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, Power Point and MS Project.
- Proven ability to work as a team player and independently with limited supervision.
- Strong presentation skills and the ability to convey information clearly.
- Ability to work independently and drive challenges to resolution.
- Relevant industry experience, preferably in a quantitative discipline.
- Exposure to Collibra and other data governance tools.

- Knowledge of Financial Services and its component Business Services.
- Knowledge of Data Quality practices and controls implementation.
- Knowledge of emerging trends within the Data Management landscape.
