Role Summary

We are looking for a Finance Manager (Vice President) to join the team. This is a key hire in support of SMDAM's plans to significantly expand its asset management activities outside of Japan over the next five years. This expansion will focus on the development of an existing Luxembourg domiciled UCITS platform and segregated account business focusing on equities and fixed income; and the development and launch of a range of alternative funds (including private credit and infrastructure finance) leveraging the expertise of the wider SMFG/SMBC Group.

We are looking for a qualified or part qualified accountant to support all areas of finance operation, including statutory financial reporting, management accounting, audit and taxation.

Position Description

The successful candidate will have proven strong experience of accounting and finance, with sound knowledge of UK GAAP and UK tax and regulatory regimes. Having an exposure of working in the asset management industry is advantageous but not necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee daily accounting and financial reporting
  • Support audit and preparation of set of financial statements
  • Provide support for IFRS conversion from FRS 102
  • Support business planning, budgeting, and forecasting
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly division-based management accounts
  • Support monthly management report to Tokyo head office
  • Oversee quarterly SMFG consolidation reporting
  • Provide financial analysis on a monthly and quarterly basis to support strategic decision-making
  • Manage investment management fees (revenue) and monitor expenses against budget
  • Proactively review upcoming regulatory changes (including across regulatory (FCA), finance and immigration etc.), assessing the impact on the firm and its funds and ensuring effective implementation
  • Liaise with external advisors when required and manage legal spend effectively.
  • Support development and maintenance of financial reporting frameworks for UK and EU in collaboration with overseas colleagues

Tax & Regulatory compliance

  • Coordinate the preparation and submission of tax returns and regulatory filings
  • Support for preparation of transfer pricing documents
  • Review quarterly VAT returns and direct tax filings

Skills and Experience

  • Finance experience gained in-house or accounting practice
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of the UK finance and taxation
  • Strong understanding of financial accounting, tax strategies, regulatory compliance, with a strong focus on accuracy, timeliness, and strategic insight
  • Strong knowledge in IFRS, UK GAAP
  • Strong communication skills to enable clear and concise presentation of complex finance topics
  • Ability to manage external stakeholders and operate as relationship manager for service providers with a focus on efficiency of relationship and driving value for SMBC Private Market's investment vehicles by constantly evaluating monitoring fee spend vs. quality of service
  • Awareness and understanding of asset management is a strong positive
  • Should have a relevant professional qualification (ACCA/ACA/ACT or similar)
  • Proficiency in Japanese (both Speaking and Writing) is a key advantage
