This is a senior role in the Capital and Portfolio Management team, focused on capital management and asset allocation strategy, risk distribution for ROE improvements and use of structured credit products in portfolio management.

  • Develop product specific solutions to lower RWA and manage the EMEA balance sheet including use of SRTs, CRI and Securitisations by leading product teams.
  • Build comprehensive asset selection optimisation tools for risk distribution products - SRTs, CRI and Securitisations taking into account capital usage and economic outcome metrics.
  • SME on regulatory and capital rules across EMEA regional regulators (PRA and ECB) and SMBC's global regulator (JFSA).
  • Lead strategically important initiatives across the EMEA region related to modelling, advocacy and optimisation of the region's regulatory capital footprint and generate uplift to the regional ROE level.
  • Partner with Product teams across EMEA Departments to develop new products or to improve existing products by providing expert knowledge of capital consumption of the regional portfolio and the regulatory environment and detailed analysis of market trends.

Background

SMBC's EMEA strategy is to grow its business through the establishment of its three front office verticals and to focus on its corporate and investment banking including cross selling capital markets, derivatives and loan origination and distribution. Efficient allocation of constrained resources including capital and balance sheet with a focus on profitability and ROE improvement will be key to achieving long term sustainable growth. The Capital and Portfolio Management Strategy function is key to the optimal allocation of capital and setting portfolio strategy in the EMEA region to achieve the region's aims of sustainable growth and ROE uplift. SMBC requires an active portfolio optimization programme with enhanced solutions, not only passive portfolio management.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Capital Management: Identify initiatives and develop products that are regulatory compliant and enhance ROE profitability through risk distribution. Manage and review capital calculations across all EMEA's product sets to ensure continued accuracy within internal model frameworks and an evolving external regulatory capital framework. Develop capital optimisation models and implement enhanced solutions taking into account product structuring, legal entity booking locations and interplay with local regulatory reporting and capital requirements.
  • Stakeholder Management: In collaboration with relevant stakeholders in Finance, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Treasury, Planning and business lines ensure business capital use and profitability improvements are clearly articulated and where possible aligned to other initiatives / projections across the Group.
  • Regulatory Relationships: In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, represent SMBC EMEA in internal regulatory working group and where appropriate with external groups to focus on improving regulatory capital treatments.
  • Portfolio analysis: Support SMBC EMEA marketing teams on profitability analysis, deal structuring for capital use optimisation and approval and provide external benchmarks and analysis. Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the approval process is transparent and efficient.
  • Governance and assurance: Adherence to the Group's product development and procedures frameworks, ensuring products and policy are aligned with governance and assurance. Help drive the continual improvement and updating of product and procedure manuals as SME for capital treatment on risk distribution products.
  • Consistency: Ensure all capital treatments and charges are consistent for the business across Economic Capital, Regulatory Capital, Stress Testing, IFRS9 (provisions) and RWA.
  • Market Knowledge: Remain up to date with regulatory capital developments and act as a focal point for continuing regulatory capital compliance within SMBC EMEA and support wider initiatives across SMBC globally.
