We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Weights) to join the On‑Cycle (programme delivery) Weights Engineering team. In this role, you will take responsibility for coordinating, analysing, and delivering all weight‑related activities across assigned vehicle programmes. You will work closely with cross‑functional engineering teams to set and achieve targets, resolve complex mass‑related issues, and ensure compliance with certification and regulatory requirements.
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
- Programme Weight Management
- Lead coordination of vehicle weight data across all functional owners.
- Own programme‑level weight targets, including target setting and balancing.
- Status reporting to Integration and senior leadership.
- Apply set control models to determine the mass and loads for all buildable programme derivatives.
- Mass Issue Resolution & Analysis
- Lead resolution of key mass‑related challenges, including target gaps, load distribution, and feasibility.
- Calculate vehicle mass properties from geometry or first‑principles methods.
- Coordinate the creation, maintenance, and validation of Vehicle Mass Property Models.
- Certification & Verification
- Create and validate Vehicle Loading Charts, resolving any limit feasibility concerns.
- Conduct weight verification activities for prototype and production vehicles.
- Lead the certification of vehicle masses with appropriate authorities.
- Monitor in‑market vehicle weight to ensure they remain within tolerance.
Key Performance Indicators
- Establish competitive vehicle weight targets using benchmarking insights to inform programme direction.
- Monitor and communicate programme status against targets, ensuring readiness at all gateway stages.
- Manage and maintain RMDV requirements, ensuring robust and traceable validation evidence.
- Deliver all Weight Engineering outputs, including Loading Charts and Parametric Models, to programme milestones.
- Produce programme health panel charts for leadership reviews and decision‑making.
- Provide timely and accurate certification data to support homologation and regulatory approval.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential
- Strong customer‑focused mindset, with an understanding of internal customer needs and end‑user expectations.
- Solid understanding of Weight and Mass Properties and their interaction with other vehicle attributes.
- Ability to prioritise workload effectively and work independently.
- Strong engineering aptitude, with experience in testing, evaluation, and working to defined procedures with accuracy.
- Willingness to work autonomously across multiple sites, building strong working relationships with local staff.
Desirable
- Degree in Engineering, Maths, or Physics (preferred but not essential).
- Experience in whole‑vehicle engineering and cross‑functional delivery.
- Understanding of automotive technologies related to weight reduction and lightweighting strategies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications including Project, PowerPoint, and Excel.
