About the role
This apprenticeship offers a fantastic opportunity to train as a skilled Pipefitter & Welder at Sulzer Pumps (UK) Ltd. You will gain hands-on experience and formal qualifications in the fabrication, assembly, installation, and welding of pipe systems critical to our pump manufacturing and service operations.
Job Responsibilities- Learning and applying various welding techniques (e.g., TIG, MIG, MMA) on different materials (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel).
- Assisting experienced Pipefitters and Welders in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of pipework systems according to technical drawings and specifications.
- Interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, and blueprints to determine pipe layouts, dimensions, and welding requirements.
- Measuring, cutting, threading, bending, and joining pipes using appropriate tools and machinery.
- Inspecting and testing pipe systems for leaks and compliance with quality standards.
- Adhering to all health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies.
- Maintaining a clean and organised work area.
- Attending and actively participating in college-based training and assessments to achieve relevant qualifications.
- Developing a strong understanding of different pipe materials, fittings, and their applications.
- Assisting with general workshop duties and supporting the wider manufacturing team as required.
- A minimum of 3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4 (C) or above, including Mathematics, English, and a Science or Technical subject.
- A strong mechanical aptitude, practical skills, and an interest in engineering and manufacturing.
- A keen willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and a strong work ethic.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions.
- A commitment to working safely and adhering to all health and safety procedures.
- Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
- The ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in various positions.

Year 1: Our apprentices will attend college full time during their first year as an apprentice while they work towards a Level 2 or 3 qualification. Here you will learn the basics needed for your role with us at Sulzer.
Years 2, 3 & 4: Join the team at Sulzer—You’ll be supported in putting the practical skills you learnt at college into real work. To support your development, you will be offered internal training and mentoring while working towards a Level 3 qualification and final Apprenticeship Standard.
