Overview About The Role
As a Lifting Apprentice at Sulzer, you will gain hands-on experience and foundational knowledge in safe and efficient lifting operations within an industrial setting. You will work under the guidance of experienced professionals, learning to operate various lifting equipment and contribute to critical projects.
Responsibilities
- Assist qualified technicians and engineers in the preparation and execution of lifting plans.
- Learn to inspect lifting equipment (e.g., cranes, hoists, slings, shackles) for defects and compliance with safety standards.
- Support the rigging and de-rigging of loads, ensuring proper weight distribution and secure attachment.
- Operate basic lifting equipment under direct supervision, adhering to all safety protocols and company procedures.
- Participate in pre-lift briefings and post-lift debriefings to understand objectives and identify areas for improvement.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment inspections, maintenance, and operational activities.
- Contribute to maintaining a clean and organized work environment, including proper storage of tools and equipment.
- Actively engage in all training modules and mentorship opportunities provided.
- Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies.
Qualifications
- 3 predicted or achieved GCSE Grade 4 (or equivalent), which must include Maths and English.
- A strong interest in mechanical operations, heavy equipment, and industrial environments.
- Basic understanding of physics and mechanics is a plus.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively within a team.
- Willingness to learn and commit to a structured apprenticeship program.
- Physical fitness required to perform manual tasks, lift moderate weights, and work in various industrial conditions.
- Excellent safety awareness and a commitment to safe working practices.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Timeframe and progression
- Year 1: Our apprentices will attend college full time during their first year as an apprentice while they work towards a Level 2 or 3 qualification. Here you will learn the basics needed for your role with us at Sulzer.
- Years 2, 3 & 4: Join the team at Sulzer—You’ll be supported in putting the practical skills you learnt at college into real work. To support your development, you will be offered internal training and mentoring while working towards a Level 3 qualification and final Apprenticeship Standard.
