We are looking for a suitably-qualified Assistant Warden to join our South East Suffolk conservation team. The role involves supporting the Senior Warden in delivering high-quality conservation management across a portfolio of reserves including Foxburrow, Blaxhall Common, Captain’s Wood, Sandlings Heaths and Forest, Bromeswell Green, Hutchison’s Meadow, Martlesham Wilds, Newbourne Springs, Trimley Marshes and Levington Lagoon. The reserve network covers over 50 nature reserves, totaling more than 2,900 hectares, with a range of habitats including floodplain marsh, lowland fen, reedbed, open water, wet meadow, valley fen, lowland heath, grassland, ancient woodland, coppiced woodland, estuarine mudflats and saltmarsh.
Responsibilities
- Support the line management of the Senior Warden, ensuring reserves are managed in line with conservation objectives and management plans.
- Contribute to agri‑environment scheme agreements, complete habitat management tasks, coordinate ecological monitoring and produce evidence‑based reports.
- Prepare contractor specifications, supervise works as needed, maintain machinery, vehicles, equipment and reserve infrastructure to a high standard.
- Ensure livestock welfare standards are consistently met where livestock are part of the conservation approach.
- Lead and support day‑to‑day volunteer activities, input into work schedules and ensure Health & Safety procedures are understood and followed.
- Develop reserves as welcoming flagship sites, ensuring visitors enjoy safe and accessible trails, signage, interpretation and facilities.
- Act as an ambassador for Suffolk Wildlife Trust, supporting open days, guided walks and talks and sharing the story of the Trust’s conservation impact through various channels.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a similar conservation role.
- Broad knowledge of habitat and conservation management, including awareness of agri‑environment schemes and Cross Compliance.
- Strong IT skills, particularly in Microsoft 365, with willingness to use GIS, volunteer management and CRM systems.
- Familiarity with Health & Safety requirements.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to work effectively as a team member.
- Well organised, practical, adaptable and an effective problem‑solver.
- Self‑motivated, enthusiastic and engaging, committed to environmental issues and able to undertake outdoor work in all weathers.
Benefits
- Permanent, full‑time position (37.5 hours per week, typical Monday to Friday 9:00 am‑5:00 pm).
